Modern archaeology has not solved Teotihuacan's central mysteries.

In 1905, the Mexican archaeologist Leopoldo Batres (leh-oh-POL-doh BAH-tres) excavated and reconstructed the Pyramid of the Sun for Mexico's centennial celebration in 1910. His reconstruction was disastrous: he added an inauthentic fifth terrace to the pyramid (it originally had four) and destroyed archaeological context in the process. Batres's botched restoration is a reminder that archaeology can destroy as well as discover.

Between 1962 and 1973, the American archaeologist René Millon led the Teotihuacan Mapping Project, a comprehensive survey that revealed the full urban extent of the city for the first time. Millon's team mapped over 5,000 structures across 8 square miles (20 km²) of planned urban grid, transforming the understanding of Teotihuacan from a ceremonial center with some pyramids to a genuine city with residential neighborhoods, industrial districts, ethnic barrios, and infrastructure. The Millon map remains the foundation of all Teotihuacan research.

In 2003, the Mexican archaeologist Sergio Gómez Chávez (SEHR-hee-oh GO-mes CHAH-ves) discovered a sealed tunnel beneath the Temple of the Feathered Serpent. Excavation of the tunnel (which took over a decade) revealed a chamber at the end containing liquid mercury (the only known use of mercury in ancient Mesoamerica), thousands of small metallic spheres made of pyrite, greenstone figurines, pyrite mirrors, shells, and rubber balls. The walls of the tunnel were covered in a mineral powder that glittered when lit by firelight, creating the impression of being inside a starfield. The tunnel may have been a ritual representation of the underworld, a symbolic cave beneath the temple echoing the real cave beneath the Pyramid of the Sun. Some archaeologists speculated that the tunnel might lead to a royal tomb, which would revolutionize our understanding of Teotihuacan's anonymous rulers. As of the most recent reports, no royal burial has been conclusively identified, though the tunnel's contents suggest elite ritual activity of the highest order.

In 1987, Teotihuacan was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site, recognizing it as one of the most architecturally significant sites in the pre-Columbian Americas. Today, over two million tourists visit the site annually, climbing the Pyramid of the Sun (even the inauthentic fifth terrace), walking the Street of the Dead, and standing in the Moon Plaza looking south down the avenue. The site is also a subject of ongoing conservation concern: the sheer volume of visitors erodes the ancient plaster surfaces, and proposals to restrict access to the pyramids themselves are periodically debated and periodically rejected. The pyramids are a national symbol. Mexicans are protective of their right to climb them.

Recent technology has opened new avenues of research. Muon tomography (a technique that uses naturally occurring subatomic particles to image the interior of structures, similar to a cosmic X-ray) has been applied to the Pyramid of the Sun, revealing possible voids and chambers inside the structure that have not been excavated. LiDAR surveys (laser scanning that penetrates ground cover to reveal buried structures) have mapped features around the site that surface surveys missed. And isotopic analysis of skeletal remains continues to refine our understanding of where Teotihuacan's residents came from, what they ate, and how they lived. The city that left no texts is slowly yielding its secrets to chemistry and physics instead.

But none of this has answered the biggest question: what happened?

Around 550 CE, somebody set fire to the ceremonial center of Teotihuacan.

The burning was not an accident. It was not a general conflagration that swept through the city. It was targeted, selective, and deliberate. The fires were set in the temples, palaces, and administrative buildings along the Street of the Dead. The Pyramid of the Moon's associated buildings burned. Compounds near the Ciudadela burned. Elite residential compounds along the ceremonial core burned. But the residential neighborhoods, the apartment compounds where the ordinary population lived, were largely spared. The pattern is unmistakable: whoever set the fires was attacking the state, not the city. They were burning the seats of power while leaving the homes standing.

The archaeological evidence rules out some explanations. This was not a foreign invasion. No foreign army is known to have been in the Basin of Mexico at this time, and no foreign pottery, weapons, or artifacts appear in the burn layers. The destruction was too selective to be an invading army's sack (invaders burn everything; these fires targeted specific buildings). This was not an earthquake or a natural disaster. The fire pattern follows political geography, not seismic or weather patterns.

The consensus among scholars is that the fire was an internal revolt: an uprising by some segment of Teotihuacan's own population against the ruling elite. The targets were the buildings associated with political and religious authority. The sparing of residential areas suggests that the revolt was not aimed at destroying the city itself but at destroying the regime that ran it. The closest parallel in world history might be the French Revolution's destruction of the Bastille and the palaces of the aristocracy while the neighborhoods of Paris were left intact. The analogy is imperfect (we know nothing about Teotihuacan's political ideology), but the physical pattern is similar: rage directed at symbols and seats of power, not at the population.

What triggered the revolt? We don't know. Speculation has focused on several factors:

Environmental stress. The centuries of lime-plaster production had consumed enormous quantities of wood (burning limestone to produce lime requires vast amounts of fuel), and the deforestation may have degraded the agricultural land around the city, reducing food production and creating famine conditions. Pollen cores from the Teotihuacan Valley show a dramatic decline in tree pollen during the city's later phases, consistent with severe deforestation. The Teotihuacan Valley's semi-arid environment was vulnerable to overexploitation, and a city of 100,000-plus residents placed enormous demands on the land. If the surrounding hillsides were stripped bare, erosion would have degraded the agricultural soil that fed the city, creating a feedback loop: more building required more plaster, which required more wood, which degraded more farmland, which reduced food production, which strained the population. This is speculative, but the ecological math is plausible.

Political crisis. If Teotihuacan's government had shifted to collective or oligarchic rule after the Adosada revolution of 250 CE (Chapter 3), the system may have become rigid, corrupt, or unresponsive. Collective governments, when they fail, can fail suddenly: when no single leader can make decisions, paralysis leads to collapse.

External pressure. While no foreign army destroyed Teotihuacan, the city's commercial and diplomatic networks were under stress by the 5th century. Teotihuacan's influence in the Maya lowlands waned after the mid-5th century (Tikal's Teotihuacan-linked dynasty continued, but subsequent generations became more Maya than Teotihuacan in culture). Other Mesoamerican centers were growing in independence. The obsidian trade may have faced competition. A city whose power rested on economic dominance is vulnerable when the economy shifts.

Inequality. The apartment compounds were relatively uniform, but the gap between the elite (who lived in lavishly painted compounds along the Street of the Dead and controlled the temples and markets) and the ordinary population was real. The sacrificial burials under the pyramids were a reminder that the state had the power of life and death. If conditions deteriorated, if food ran short, if the promises that justified the elite's authority (agricultural fertility, cosmic order, military success) stopped being fulfilled, the resentment could have been explosive.

Drought. Climate studies have identified a period of reduced rainfall in central Mexico during the 6th century CE that may have stressed the agricultural system. The drought was not as severe as the 4.2-kiloyear event that contributed to the collapse of the Old Kingdom in Egypt, but for a city of 100,000 people in a semi-arid valley, even a modest reduction in rainfall could have been catastrophic, particularly if deforestation had already degraded the watershed.

We do not know which of these factors, or which combination, was decisive. The mystery of Teotihuacan's collapse mirrors the mystery of its governance. We do not know who ran the city. We do not know who burned it. The anonymity that defines Teotihuacan in life defines it in death.

The collapse was not total.

People continued living in Teotihuacan after the fire. The population dropped dramatically, from over 100,000 to perhaps 20,000–40,000 within a generation, but the city was never completely abandoned. Squatter settlements appeared among the ruins. Some apartment compounds continued to be occupied, their residents living in the shadow of burned-out temples and shattered pyramids. The remaining population was a fraction of the city's former size, and its material culture was simpler, less specialized, and less connected to the broader Mesoamerican trade networks that had sustained the city at its peak.

But the collapse of Teotihuacan was not just a local event. It was a geopolitical earthquake.

The Epiclassic period (roughly 550–900 CE), the era that followed Teotihuacan's fall, was defined by the power vacuum the city left behind. Regional centers that had existed in Teotihuacan's shadow, suppressed or subordinated by the great city's economic and military dominance, suddenly had room to grow. Xochicalco (sho-chee-KAHL-ko), a hilltop fortress-city southwest of Mexico City, rose to prominence with a deliberately eclectic architectural style that borrowed from Teotihuacan, Maya, and Zapotec traditions. Cacaxtla (kah-KAHSH-tlah), east of Mexico City, produced murals showing Maya-style warriors in scenes of battle and sacrifice, evidence of the cultural blending that followed Teotihuacan's fall. Cholula (cho-LOO-lah), the ancient city with the enormous pyramid 70 miles to the southeast, continued to grow and eventually became the most important pilgrimage center in central Mexico.

In the Maya lowlands, Teotihuacan's collapse roughly coincided with the intensification of the Tikal-Calakmul rivalry (Maya Civilization Ch 3) and the peak of Classic Maya warfare. Whether the two events are connected is debated, but the chronological coincidence is suggestive: the removal of Teotihuacan's stabilizing influence (or destabilizing intervention, depending on your interpretation) may have freed the Maya city-states to fight each other more aggressively.

In the Valley of Oaxaca, Monte Albán continued for another century or so after Teotihuacan's collapse but eventually declined as well, its population dispersing to smaller centers. Whether Monte Albán's decline was caused by Teotihuacan's collapse (the loss of a major trading partner and diplomatic counterweight) or by independent local factors is debated. The Oaxacan Barrio at Teotihuacan presumably ceased to function as a diplomatic community once both cities declined, ending one of the longest-running intercultural relationships in Mesoamerican history.

The obsidian trade networks that Teotihuacan had monopolized fragmented. Regional centers gained control of obsidian sources that Teotihuacan had previously dominated, and the green obsidian from Sierra de las Navajas, once a marker of Teotihuacan's economic reach across the continent, became just another commodity rather than a prestige monopoly. The economic architecture that Teotihuacan had built, the system of centralized production and long-distance distribution that had made the city indispensable, dissolved. It would take the Aztecs, arriving seven centuries later, to rebuild anything comparable.

Seven hundred years passed. The ruins crumbled. The murals faded. The apartment compounds filled with dirt and scrub. The pyramids, too massive to disappear entirely, became overgrown hills that the local population used as landmarks and occasionally explored for curiosity or building stone.

Then the Aztecs arrived.

The Mexica (meh-SHEE-kah), the people who would build the Aztec Empire, migrated into the Basin of Mexico in the 13th century CE and founded their capital, Tenochtitlán (teh-nohch-teet-LAHN), on an island in Lake Texcoco in 1325 CE. They were newcomers to a region with deep history, and they knew it. Teotihuacan's ruins, thirty miles northeast of their own capital, were the most impressive physical evidence of that history. The Aztecs made pilgrimages to the site. They named the pyramids (the Pyramid of the Sun, the Pyramid of the Moon, the Street of the Dead: all Aztec names, not original ones). They collected Teotihuacan artifacts, especially the green obsidian that still littered the surface, and reused them in their own rituals. And they wove Teotihuacan into their creation mythology: the Fifth Sun, the current cosmic era, was born at Teotihuacan, where the gods sacrificed themselves in fire to set the sun in motion.

The name Teotihuacan, "the place where the gods were born," was itself a mythology. The Aztecs looked at the ruins, saw a city too vast to have been built by ordinary people, and concluded that only gods could have built it. They were wrong about the builders, but they were right about the scale. Teotihuacan was one of the largest cities the world had ever seen, and the people who built it accomplished the feat without any of the technologies that the Old World considered essential for civilization.

The Aztec appropriation of Teotihuacan is itself a remarkable historical phenomenon. The Mexica were newcomers to the Basin of Mexico, arrivals from the northern frontier who needed to legitimize their presence among older, more established peoples. Teotihuacan provided that legitimacy. By claiming the ruins as the birthplace of the current world age, the Aztecs inserted themselves into a sacred geography that predated their arrival by centuries. Teotihuacan's pyramids became the physical proof that the Basin of Mexico was sacred ground, that divine power had once operated here, and that the Aztecs, as the inheritors of that ground, were destined to rule it. The anonymous city, which had refused to name its own rulers, was given a mythological history by strangers who needed its authority more than its facts. Even in death, Teotihuacan served as a tool of political power. Archaeological excavations at the Aztec Templo Mayor in the 20th century have confirmed the material dimension of this appropriation: among the thousands of buried offerings, archaeologists recovered Teotihuacan artifacts — green obsidian blades, masks, and figurines — deliberately placed as sacred deposits in the heart of the Aztec capital (Aztec Empire Ch 5). The ruins were not just mythology; they were a quarry for sacred objects.

The mystery remains.

We know what Teotihuacan looked like. We can reconstruct its economy, its trade networks, its ethnic composition, its art, its religion, and its approximate population. We can trace its influence from Oaxaca to the Maya lowlands, from the Gulf Coast to the highlands of Guatemala. We can date its founding, its monumental construction phases, its internal revolution around 250 CE, its intervention at Tikal in 378 CE, and its fiery collapse around 550 CE.

But we cannot name a single person who lived there.

This is not a gap in the record. It is the record. Teotihuacan's anonymity was a choice, made by the people who ran the city, sustained for five centuries, and so thorough that two thousand years of archaeology have not overturned it. Every other major civilization in this series, from Mesopotamia to Rome, from the Maya to the Shang dynasty, put names on their monuments. They wanted to be remembered as individuals. Teotihuacan's rulers wanted the opposite. They wanted the city to be remembered. They wanted the gods to be remembered. They wanted themselves to be invisible.

They succeeded.

Compare this to every other great ancient city. We know who built the Great Pyramid of Giza (Pharaoh Khufu). We know who built Persepolis (Darius I). We know who planned the grid of Chang'an (the Sui dynasty engineers). We know who rebuilt Rome's forum (Augustus, and he made sure everyone knew it). We know the names of the Maya kings who dedicated every stela at Tikal and Copán. Teotihuacan's builders achieved more than most of these rulers and said less about themselves than any of them. Two hundred thousand people lived, worked, worshipped, and died in a city governed by anonymity, and the anonymity held for five centuries.

The city that nobody can explain, the most powerful state in the ancient Americas for five hundred years, governed by people whose names we will never know, built without writing, destroyed by fire, and named by strangers seven centuries after its fall. Teotihuacan is the greatest anonymous civilization in human history, and its silence is the loudest thing about it.
