The Maya civilization that emerged after the Classic Collapse was different from what came before. The divine kings of the Classic period, with their Long Count dates and their elaborate genealogical inscriptions, were gone. The new Maya world was more commercial, more cosmopolitan, more openly syncretic (blending Maya traditions with ideas from central Mexico), and more focused on trade than on carved stelae and dynastic propaganda. It was not a decline. It was a transformation.

The dominant city of the early Postclassic Maya world was Chichén Itzá, a site in the northern Yucatán whose architecture and art blend Maya and central Mexican elements in ways that scholars have debated for over a century.

Chichén Itzá was occupied from at least the 7th century CE, but it reached its peak between roughly 900 and 1100 CE. What makes it distinctive is the split personality of its architecture. The "Old" Chichén section has buildings in recognizable Maya styles (Puuc-style facades, corbel-arched rooms, rain god masks). The "New" Chichén section has buildings that look nothing like Classic Maya architecture and a lot like the architecture of central Mexico: the Great Ball Court (the largest in all of Mesoamerica, roughly 545 feet / 166 meters long), the Temple of the Warriors (a massive colonnade-fronted platform covered in carved warrior figures holding atlatl dart throwers and wearing distinctly non-Maya regalia), and, most famously, El Castillo (el kahs-TEE-yo), the stepped pyramid also known as the Temple of Kukulcán (koo-kool-KAHN).

The cult of Kukulcán (the Maya name for the feathered serpent deity known as Quetzalcoatl in central Mexico) became the defining religious feature of Postclassic Maya civilization. Kukulcán worship was probably not new: feathered serpent imagery goes back to the Olmec period (Olmec Ch 4). But at Chichén Itzá, the feathered serpent moved from background decoration to center stage. El Castillo's most famous feature is the equinox shadow effect: on the spring and fall equinoxes, the late-afternoon sun casts triangular shadows along the northern staircase that create the illusion of a serpent's body descending the pyramid, connecting to the carved serpent head at the base. Whether this effect was intentionally designed is debated (some scholars think it's a coincidence of geometry), but the alignment is precise enough that it draws hundreds of thousands of visitors every equinox.

El Castillo's engineering is precise. The pyramid has 91 steps on each of its four sides, plus the platform at the top: 364 + 1 = 365, the number of days in the solar year. This may be coincidental. Or it may be another example of the Maya habit of embedding astronomical and calendrical information into architecture, making the building itself a calendar. The pyramid contains an earlier, smaller pyramid inside it (discovered in the 1930s), with a jade-studded jaguar throne and a Chac Mool figure (a reclining figure holding a bowl on its stomach, probably for receiving offerings) in a buried chamber. This nesting of pyramids within pyramids was common Maya practice: each new ruler built over his predecessor's temple, literally covering the old king's monument with his own.

The Sacred Cenote at Chichén Itzá, a large natural sinkhole about 200 feet (60 meters) in diameter and 90 feet (27 meters) deep to the water surface, served as a major pilgrimage site. Offerings of jade, gold, pottery, obsidian, rubber, copal incense, and human beings were thrown into the cenote over centuries. Dredging operations in the early 20th century recovered thousands of objects, including jade from Guatemala, gold from Panama and Colombia (the first significant gold artifacts in the Maya world, reflecting Postclassic trade connections with South America via Central American intermediaries), and the remains of sacrificial victims. The cenote was a portal to Xibalba (shee-BAL-bah), the Maya underworld, and offerings cast into its waters were sent directly to the lords of death. The range of objects recovered tells a story of Chichén Itzá's far-flung connections: jade and obsidian from the Maya highlands, copper from western Mexico, gold from lower Central America, pottery from across the Yucatán. The cenote was not just a religious site. It was a map of Postclassic Mesoamerican trade, every offering tracing a line on the map from its point of origin to this pool of dark water in the jungle.

Where did the central Mexican influence come from? The traditional explanation, popularized in the 19th and early 20th centuries, was that Toltec warriors from the city of Tula (TOO-lah) in central Mexico conquered Chichén Itzá and imposed their culture on the Maya. This "Toltec invasion" theory was supported by the striking similarities between Chichén Itzá's Temple of the Warriors and Tula's Pyramid B, the presence of warrior imagery with Toltec-style atlatl throwers, and later Aztec legends about a Toltec king named Topiltzin Quetzalcoatl (toh-PEELT-seen ket-sahl-ko-AH-tul) who was driven from Tula and sailed east to the Maya lands.

Modern scholars have largely abandoned the simple conquest theory. The relationship between Chichén Itzá and central Mexico was probably more complex: a blend of trade connections, elite exchange, shared religious cults (especially the feathered serpent), and possibly the arrival of central Mexican warrior-merchants who integrated into Maya society rather than conquering it. The architectural similarities between Chichén Itzá and Tula may reflect a shared culture of militarized elites across Mesoamerica in the early Postclassic, rather than one city copying the other. And recent dating suggests that some of Chichén Itzá's "Toltec" architecture may actually predate Tula's, which would make the influence flow in the opposite direction.

What's clear is that Chichén Itzá was a cosmopolitan city. Its art includes imagery from multiple cultural traditions. Its architecture blends Maya and non-Maya elements. Its trade connections reached from central Mexico to Colombia. And its religion, centered on the feathered serpent cult, was pan-Mesoamerican rather than specifically Maya. Chichén Itzá was a city where the Maya world met the wider Mesoamerican world, and the result was something new.

Chichén Itzá declined around 1100 CE. The reasons, as usual, are debated: internal political conflict, competition from rising rivals, disruption of trade routes, or some combination. The city was not destroyed (it remained a pilgrimage site for centuries), but its political dominance ended. Power in the northern Yucatán shifted to Mayapán (mah-yah-PAHN), a walled city about 25 miles (40 km) southeast of the modern city of Mérida.

Mayapán ruled the Yucatán from roughly 1200 to 1441 CE through a political system called the League of Mayapán, a confederacy of allied noble houses led by the Cocom (ko-KOM) dynasty. The League was, in theory, a cooperative arrangement among the major Maya noble families. In practice, the Cocom family dominated through a combination of military force (they employed central Mexican mercenaries) and the authority of their supposed descent from the rulers of Chichén Itzá.

Mayapán was smaller and less architecturally ambitious than Chichén Itzá. Its version of El Castillo (a stepped pyramid in the center of the city) is a smaller, cruder copy of the Chichén Itzá original. Its wall enclosed roughly 1.6 square miles (4.2 square km), within which an estimated 15,000 to 20,000 people lived in tightly packed residential compounds. The wall itself is significant: Classic Maya cities were not walled (they sprawled openly through the jungle, with no defensive perimeters). The fact that Mayapán needed a wall tells us something about the security environment of the Postclassic. The Cocom rulers held power partly through force (they kept a garrison of central Mexican mercenaries, the Canul warriors, who enforced Cocom authority and served as a standing army), and partly through the requirement that lords of the allied noble houses reside within Mayapán's walls, where they could be watched. The system was, in essence, a hostage arrangement disguised as a confederacy.

Meanwhile, the northern Yucatán's salt trade was reshaping Maya economics. The shallow coastal lagoons along the north coast produced high-quality salt through solar evaporation, and salt became a major export commodity, traded by canoe along coastal routes stretching from Tabasco to Honduras. Salt, cacao, honey, and cotton cloth were the primary commodities of a Postclassic maritime trade network that was, in some ways, more commercially sophisticated than the Classic-period overland trade in jade and obsidian.

Maya coastal trading canoes were large, seagoing vessels capable of carrying up to 40 passengers and several tons of cargo. These were not dugout canoes in the way that word is usually understood. They were massive craft, carved from single mahogany or ceiba trunks, with freeboard added using planks, and they were paddled by crews of up to 25 men along the coast and across open stretches of the Caribbean. The Postclassic maritime trade route ran from Tabasco around the entire Yucatán Peninsula to the Bay of Honduras, with major stops at island ports like Cozumel (koh-soo-MEL) and coastal trading towns like Tulum (too-LOOM), the clifftop city whose postcard-perfect ruins overlook the Caribbean Sea.

When Columbus encountered a Maya trading canoe off the coast of Honduras during his fourth voyage in 1502 CE, he described a vessel "as long as a galley and eight feet wide," loaded with cacao, copper bells, cotton cloth, obsidian blades, and a crew that included a merchant, sailors, and women and children. The encounter was, as far as we know, the first recorded contact between Europeans and Maya civilization. Columbus had no idea what he was looking at. He sailed on. The Maya, for their part, had no idea that the strange men in their floating castles were the advance guard of the end of their world.

Mayapán's confederacy lasted until 1441 CE, when it ended in a characteristically Maya fashion: betrayal and violence from within.

The Xiu (SHEE-oo) faction, one of the noble families in the League, led a revolt against the Cocom rulers. The Xiu lord Ah Kukum Xiu (ah koo-KOOM SHEE-oo) organized an attack on Mayapán, sacking the city, massacring the Cocom lords (tradition says only one Cocom prince survived, because he was away on a trading voyage), and destroying the last centralized Maya political authority in the Yucatán.

After Mayapán's fall, the northern Yucatán fragmented into roughly sixteen small, quarrelsome provinces (called kuchkabalob, kooch-kah-bah-LOB), each ruled by a local lord, each feuding with its neighbors, and none strong enough to reunify the region. This was the political situation that the Spanish found when they arrived, and the fragmentation made the Maya simultaneously harder to conquer (no single ruler to defeat and no capital to capture) and easier to exploit (the Spanish played factions against each other with devastating effectiveness).

The Dresden Codex (named for the German library where it is now housed), compiled around 1200 CE, is the oldest surviving book from the Americas. It is a folding bark-paper manuscript, roughly 11.5 feet (3.5 meters) long when unfolded, covered in hieroglyphic text and colored illustrations. Its contents include astronomical tables for predicting eclipses and the movements of Venus, Mars, and the Moon, as well as almanacs tying these celestial events to agricultural and ritual activities. The astronomical tables are extraordinarily accurate (Chapter 7). The Dresden Codex, along with three other surviving Maya codices (the Madrid, Paris, and Grolier codices), represents a tiny fraction of what was once a vast literary tradition. The rest was lost to decay, neglect, and deliberate destruction by the Spanish (Chapter 8).
