The Aztec Empire (the last great Mesoamerican empire, centered in central Mexico from the 14th to 16th centuries CE) reached the Valley of Oaxaca in the late 1450s, when armies under Motecuhzoma I (mo-tek-SOH-mah, often anglicized as Montezuma) swept south from the central Mexican highlands and conquered Mixtec towns in the western parts of the valley. The Aztecs imposed tribute obligations (demanding cacao, gold, cochineal dye, cotton, and feathered cloaks) and established military garrisons, adding the Valley of Oaxaca to the empire's long list of tributary provinces. But the Aztecs ran into a problem with the Zapotec that they hadn't encountered with most of their other conquests: the Zapotec refused to cooperate.

The most powerful Zapotec ruler of the late fifteenth century was Cosijoeza (ko-see-ho-EH-sah), the king of Zaachila, who governed the remnants of the Zapotec political state from his capital and later from a mountain fortress. Cosijoeza's name means "lightning commands respect" in Zapotec, incorporating the name of the god Cocijo. He was, by the accounts that survive, a skilled military commander and an even more skilled negotiator, a ruler who understood that the Zapotec could not defeat the Aztec Empire in the open field but could make the cost of conquering them higher than the reward.

When the Aztec emperor Ahuitzotl (ah-WEET-sotl, ruled 1486–1502 CE) sent a major military expedition to bring the Zapotec to heel, Cosijoeza retreated to Guiengola (gee-EN-go-lah), a mountain fortress on a ridge above the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. Guiengola was a natural stronghold: steep cliffs on most sides, thick walls blocking the few approaches, cisterns to collect rainwater, and granaries stocked with enough food to endure a long siege. The Aztecs laid siege to the fortress, but they could not take it. The terrain negated their numerical advantage. The Zapotec defenders, fighting on ground they knew, held out for months.

The siege of Guiengola ended not with a Zapotec surrender but with a negotiation. Ahuitzotl offered terms: Cosijoeza would marry Coyolicatzin (ko-yo-lee-KAHT-seen), a daughter of the Aztec emperor, establishing a dynastic alliance that gave the Aztecs a claim on Zapotec loyalty while allowing the Zapotec to maintain their internal autonomy. Cosijoeza accepted. The marriage was a pragmatic arrangement on both sides: the Aztecs got a tributary relationship and a strategic ally in southern Mexico; the Zapotec got to keep their king, their institutions, and their independence in everything except the payment of tribute.

The deal held. The Zapotec remained nominally part of the Aztec tributary system but were never directly governed by Aztec officials. They kept their own rulers, their own laws, their own religion, and their own language. The contrast with other Aztec conquests is striking: many peoples in central Mexico were heavily garrisoned, had their rulers replaced with Aztec-approved governors, and were forced to provide laborers and sacrificial victims to the Aztec capital. The Zapotec avoided most of this. The mountain fortress, the strategic marriage, and Cosijoeza's diplomatic skill gave the Zapotec a degree of autonomy within the Aztec system that few other conquered peoples enjoyed. (The Aztec narrative characterizes these campaigns as a completed conquest of Oaxaca under Motecuhzoma I and Ahuitzotl — Aztec Empire Ch 3 and Ch 7. Both accounts are accurate about different things: the Aztecs won militarily; the Zapotec negotiated survival.)

Cosijoeza's son, Cosijopii (ko-see-ho-PEE), inherited his father's throne and his mother's Aztec blood. He was a prince of both worlds: the legitimate heir to the Zapotec dynasty of Zaachila and the grandson of the Aztec emperor. He was also the last Zapotec ruler to govern before the Spanish arrived.

In 1519, Hernán Cortés landed on the Gulf Coast of Mexico and began the conquest that would destroy the Aztec Empire within two years. The fall of Tenochtitlan (teh-noch-TEET-lahn, the Aztec capital, on the site of modern Mexico City) in August 1521 sent shockwaves through Mesoamerica. The most powerful empire in the Americas had been destroyed by a few hundred Spanish soldiers, their indigenous allies (who did most of the actual fighting), and the devastating impact of European diseases (especially smallpox, which killed millions of indigenous people who had no immunity). Every surviving Mesoamerican state had to decide what to do: fight, submit, or negotiate.

The Zapotec, characteristically, chose to negotiate.

When Spanish forces under Francisco de Orozco (frahn-SEES-ko deh o-ROHS-ko) entered the Valley of Oaxaca in late 1521, Cosijopii chose submission over resistance. He met the Spanish, accepted their authority, and publicly converted to Christianity, taking the baptismal name Juan Cortés (named after the conqueror). The decision was strategic: the Zapotec had seen what happened to the Aztecs, and they calculated that accommodation was more likely to preserve their people and their power than a war they could not win.

The strategy worked, partially. The Zapotec avoided the military destruction that had devastated the Aztec capital and many other Mesoamerican cities. The Spanish imposed colonial institutions (the encomienda system, which granted Spanish colonists the right to extract labor and tribute from indigenous communities), Catholic missions, and Spanish administrative structures. But the Zapotec retained more of their pre-conquest social structure than many other indigenous peoples. Local Zapotec elites, including Cosijopii's family, were incorporated into the colonial system as intermediaries between the Spanish administration and the indigenous population. Zapotec communities maintained their language, their market traditions, their agricultural practices, and, quietly, many of their religious traditions.

Cosijopii's story has a coda that captures the tension of colonial survival.

After his public conversion to Christianity, Cosijopii was discovered practicing Zapotec religious rites in secret, maintaining the old ceremonies, the old offerings, the old relationship with the gods his family had worshipped for a thousand years. The Spanish authorities, who took religious conformity seriously (the Spanish Inquisition was active in Mexico), charged him with idolatry. He was tried, convicted, stripped of his political authority, and punished. The exact details of his punishment vary in the sources (some say he was merely humiliated, others that he was imprisoned or beaten), but the message was clear: public Christianity was not optional.

Cosijopii's secret ceremonies were not an isolated act of defiance. Across the Valley of Oaxaca, across all of colonial Mexico, indigenous peoples practiced a strategy that scholars call syncretism: the blending of pre-conquest religious beliefs with Catholic forms. The old gods didn't disappear. They were reinterpreted as Catholic saints. Cocijo, the lightning god, merged with various Catholic figures associated with rain and thunder. The old festivals were timed to coincide with Catholic feast days. The old offerings were made under the guise of Catholic devotion. The practice was not unique to the Zapotec (syncretism was widespread across the Americas), but the Zapotec practiced it with particular determination and success. Today, Zapotec communities in Oaxaca maintain religious traditions that are recognizably syncretic: Catholic on the surface, with deeper layers that trace back to pre-conquest practices.

This is where most histories of the Zapotec end: with the conquest, the colonial period, and a vague gesture toward "cultural survival." But the survival deserves more than a gesture, because it is the most remarkable fact of Zapotec history.

The Zapotec were never fully conquered. Not by the Mixtec, who fought their way into the valley but never eliminated Zapotec identity. Not by the Aztecs, who imposed tribute but left Zapotec governance intact. Not by the Spanish, who destroyed the political structure but could not erase the language, the culture, or the sense of identity that had been building since the first villages in the Valley of Oaxaca more than three thousand years earlier.

Today, more than one million people in Oaxaca speak Zapotec languages. The linguistic diversity is immense: there are at least four major Zapotec language clusters and dozens of local varieties, some of them mutually unintelligible, reflecting centuries of geographic isolation and political fragmentation. Zapotec communities maintain distinct cultural traditions, including weaving patterns, pottery styles, ceremonial practices, and market customs that have evolved continuously since the pre-Columbian period. The city of Juchitán (hoo-chee-TAHN), on the Isthmus of Tehuantepec, is one of the most culturally vibrant indigenous communities in Mexico, famous for its matriarchal social traditions (women dominate the market economy and hold significant social authority), its annual festivals, and its fierce defense of Zapotec language and identity.

Monte Albán itself is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, visited by hundreds of thousands of tourists annually. Alfonso Caso's excavations in the 1930s and subsequent decades of research have made it one of the best-documented archaeological sites in the Americas. The Main Plaza, the Danzantes, Building J, the tombs, and the panoramic view of the Valley of Oaxaca are all accessible to visitors who make the winding drive up the mountain roads. The site is maintained by INAH (Mexico's National Institute of Anthropology and History), and ongoing excavations continue to reveal new information about the Zapotec civilization. Tomb 7's treasures are displayed at the Museo de las Culturas de Oaxaca, housed in a colonial-era convent adjacent to the Santo Domingo church in Oaxaca City.

The Genealogical Lienzos (lee-EN-sohs), painted cloth documents produced by Zapotec and Mixtec communities in the sixteenth century, bridge the pre-Columbian and colonial worlds. These large-format paintings on cotton cloth recorded dynastic genealogies, territorial boundaries, and historical events using a pictographic tradition that continued into the colonial period. Some lienzos were produced specifically to defend indigenous land claims in Spanish colonial courts, translating pre-conquest territorial knowledge into a format that colonial authorities could understand. They are simultaneously works of art, legal documents, and acts of cultural resistance: using the old visual language to protect the old land in a new political world.

The Zapotec story, in the end, is a story about persistence. Not the flashy kind, not the kind that gets mythology and epic poems. The persistent kind that outlasts mythology. The Olmec vanished so completely that their existence wasn't suspected for three thousand years (Olmec Civilization Ch 1). The Maya Classic civilization collapsed so dramatically that their cities were swallowed by jungle. The Aztec Empire fell to Cortés in two years. The Zapotec are still here.

They are still here because they built something that didn't depend on a single city, a single ruler, or a single political structure. Monte Albán was the center for twelve centuries, and when it fell, the Zapotec survived. The Mixtec pushed into the valley, and the Zapotec survived. The Aztecs imposed tribute, and the Zapotec survived. The Spanish destroyed the political order, and the Zapotec survived. The mechanism of survival was not military. It was cultural: a language, a set of practices, a relationship with the land and the dead that was more durable than any particular political arrangement.

The Cloud People came from the mountains, and they stayed in the mountains. They flattened a mountaintop to build their capital, carved their enemies into stone, painted their gods on tomb walls, and when the mountain fell silent, they carried their identity into the valley and the isthmus and the colonial period and the modern world. A million people still speak the language. The pottery is still gray. And the mountain is still there, waiting for anyone who wants to climb it and see what the Cloud People saw: the whole valley, spread out below, in every direction.

Cross-civ check: the Zapotec experience of European contact and colonialism (1521 CE onward) was part of a global pattern. The same century that brought the Spanish to Oaxaca saw the Portuguese establishing trading posts in India and Southeast Asia, the Ottoman Empire at its height under Suleiman, the Ming dynasty in China encountering European traders, and the beginning of the Atlantic slave trade. In the Americas, the Spanish conquest of the Aztec and Inca empires happened within a single decade (1519–1533), and indigenous peoples across the hemisphere faced the same catastrophic combination of military conquest, epidemic disease, and cultural disruption. The Zapotec response (negotiation, accommodation, syncretism, and quiet persistence) was one of the more successful survival strategies in this global catastrophe. Not every people who chose to fight were destroyed, and not every people who chose to negotiate survived. But the Zapotec bet on continuity over confrontation, and over five centuries later, the bet has paid off.
