The Second Persian Period (343 to 332 BCE) was short, brutal, and deeply resented. It lasted only eleven years, but it burned itself into Egyptian memory so thoroughly that when Alexander the Great arrived, the Egyptians greeted him as a liberator.

Artaxerxes III's occupation of Egypt was harsher than the first Persian period had been. The sources (admittedly biased toward the Egyptian perspective) describe temples being looted, sacred animals being killed, and Egyptian wealth being stripped and sent to Persia. The Apis bull at Memphis was reportedly killed. Temple revenues were confiscated. Whether all of these stories are true or whether they represent the same pattern of anti-Persian propaganda that had colored accounts of Cambyses two centuries earlier, the perception was clear: the second Persian occupation was worse than the first.

The resentment had a specific edge. Egyptians had tasted independence. Sixty years of native rule under the Twenty-eighth through Thirtieth Dynasties had revived national pride, rebuilt temples, and demonstrated that Egypt could govern itself. The Persian reconquest felt not like a return to normalcy but like a theft. Something that had been recovered was being taken away again.

Resistance continued even under occupation. Local rebellions flared in the Delta. A pretender named Khababash (pronounced "kah-BAH-bahsh") briefly seized the throne around 338 BCE, claiming the pharaonic title and minting coins before being suppressed by the Persian garrison. The rebellions never succeeded on their own, but they made Egypt an expensive and unreliable satrapy, a province that required constant military attention at a time when the Persian Empire could least afford it. Every soldier stationed in Egypt was a soldier not available to face the Macedonian army that was about to cross the Hellespont.

Artaxerxes III died in 338 BCE, probably poisoned by his own courtier Bagoas (a eunuch court official whose intrigues destabilized the late Achaemenid dynasty). His successor, Arses (pronounced "AR-seez"), was also murdered by Bagoas. The throne eventually passed to Darius III, the last Achaemenid king, who inherited an empire that was already fracturing at the edges.

Meanwhile, in Macedonia (the northern Greek kingdom that most Greek city-states considered barely Greek), a young king named Alexander III had just consolidated control over Greece after his father Philip II's assassination in 336 BCE. Alexander had an army, an ego, and a plan that would reshape the ancient world.

Alexander's conquest of Egypt in 332 BCE was one of the easiest military operations of his career. He had already destroyed the Persian army at the Battle of Issus (333 BCE) and captured the Levantine coast, including the famous seven-month siege of Tyre. When he marched into Egypt, the Persian satrap Mazaces had no army left to oppose him. Mazaces surrendered without a fight.

Alexander the Great entered Egypt as a liberator, and the Egyptians received him as one. The Persian garrison was gone. The Persian taxes would stop. The temples would be restored. For a population that had spent eleven years under a resented occupation, Alexander was not a new conqueror but a deliverer.

Alexander understood the opportunity perfectly. He went straight to Memphis, the ancient capital, and was crowned pharaoh in the traditional manner, with the priests performing the rites of divine kingship that had been performed for every legitimate Egyptian ruler for nearly three thousand years. Alexander adopted the pharaonic titles. He sacrificed to the Apis bull, publicly honoring the sacred animal that the Persians had allegedly desecrated. Every gesture was calibrated to communicate: I am not a Persian. I respect your gods. I will be your pharaoh.

Then Alexander did something strange, even by his own standards. He took a small party and marched across the Libyan Desert to the Oracle of Amun at Siwa (pronounced "SEE-wah"), an oasis roughly 350 miles (560 km) west of the Nile Delta, deep in the Sahara.

The Oracle of Siwa was one of the most prestigious oracles in the ancient world, rivaling Delphi in Greece. It was dedicated to Amun (or, as the Greeks understood him, Zeus-Ammon, a merged deity combining the Egyptian supreme god with the Greek king of the gods). The oracle had been consulted by Greek visitors for at least a century before Alexander's arrival. The Spartans had reportedly sent envoys. Pindar, the Greek lyric poet, had composed a hymn to Zeus-Ammon. Siwa was where the Egyptian and Greek religious worlds overlapped.

The march to Siwa was dangerous. Ancient sources describe the party nearly dying of thirst before miraculous rain saved them, and becoming lost in sandstorms before being guided by serpents (or, in another version, by crows). How much of this is historical and how much is the mythology that quickly accumulated around Alexander's story is impossible to say.

What happened at the oracle is equally obscure. Alexander entered the innermost sanctuary alone, speaking privately with the priest. He later told his companions that the oracle had confirmed what he wanted to hear, but he never revealed the exact words. Later traditions claim that the priest greeted him as "son of Zeus-Ammon," meaning the son of God, and that Alexander interpreted this as confirmation of his divine parentage.

The visit to Siwa was politically brilliant, whatever its spiritual significance. By receiving the oracle's blessing, Alexander gained legitimacy in both Egyptian and Greek religious frameworks simultaneously. To Egyptians, he was confirmed by Amun, the king of the gods, as a true pharaoh. To Greeks, he was confirmed by Zeus, the king of the gods, as a divinely chosen ruler. The double endorsement gave Alexander a theological claim to rule that neither his Macedonian kingship nor his military conquests alone could provide.

Before leaving Egypt, Alexander made one more decision that would outlast everything else he did in his short life.

In January 331 BCE, on a strip of land between the Mediterranean Sea and Lake Mareotis in the western Delta, Alexander laid out the plans for a new city. He named it, with characteristic modesty, after himself: Alexandria.

The site was chosen for its harbors. The natural geography offered two harbors (protected by the offshore island of Pharos), access to the Nile via the Canopic branch, and a position at the intersection of Mediterranean and Egyptian trade routes. It was also, pointedly, not an Egyptian city. Alexandria was built on the Mediterranean coast, facing outward toward Greece and the wider world, not inward toward the Nile Valley. Naucratis, the Saite-era Greek trading colony (Chapter 3), had been tucked safely inside the Delta. Alexandria was planted on the edge of Egypt, looking across the sea. The geography announced the future: Egypt would henceforth be connected to the Mediterranean world as it had never been before.

Alexander reportedly designed the street grid himself (or at least approved it), and the architect Dinocrates of Rhodes planned the layout on a Hippodamian grid (the right-angled urban plan named after the Greek city planner Hippodamus). According to the later tradition, when Alexander's engineers ran out of chalk to mark the street lines in the sandy ground, they used barley flour from the army's supplies. Birds immediately descended to eat the flour, which the seers interpreted as a sign that the city would feed multitudes. It was an appropriately Egyptian omen for a Greek city: even the founding myth was about grain.

Alexander left Egypt and never returned. He would conquer the rest of the Persian Empire, march to the Indus River, and die in Babylon in 323 BCE at the age of thirty-two, leaving behind an empire with no clear successor and a city he had founded but never seen completed.

Alexandria would become the greatest city in the Mediterranean world for the next three centuries, the intellectual capital of the Hellenistic age, and the birthplace of an entirely new chapter in Egyptian history. But that chapter, the Ptolemaic era, begins after the scope of this narrative (which covers the Late Period through Alexander's arrival). What follows in Chapters 7 and 8 looks at the cultural forces and the legacy that made Egypt's survival through this tumultuous period possible.

But first, a brief look at what came next. After Alexander's death, his generals divided his empire among themselves in a series of wars. Egypt fell to Ptolemy I Soter (pronounced "TOL-eh-mee," meaning "savior"), a Macedonian general who had been one of Alexander's closest companions. Ptolemy declared himself pharaoh in 305 BCE and founded the Ptolemaic Dynasty, which would rule Egypt for nearly three hundred years, until Cleopatra VII's death in 30 BCE.

The Ptolemies built the Library of Alexandria (founded around 283 BCE under Ptolemy I and Ptolemy II), the ancient world's greatest center of scholarship, which at its height housed hundreds of thousands of papyrus scrolls and attracted scholars from across the Mediterranean. They built the Lighthouse of Alexandria (the Pharos, completed around 280 BCE under Ptolemy II), one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World, a tower roughly 330 feet (100 meters) tall whose fire was visible for miles at sea. They built temples in pure Egyptian style at Edfu (the Temple of Horus, begun 237 BCE, the best-preserved temple in Egypt), at Philae (expanding Nectanebo I's foundations, Chapter 5), and at Dendera. They adopted the pharaonic titles, worshipped the Egyptian gods, and had themselves depicted on temple walls in the same poses and costumes as the pharaohs of old.

Ptolemy I also created a new synthetic deity, Serapis, combining elements of the Egyptian gods Osiris and Apis with the Greek gods Zeus and Hades, intended to provide a common religious focus for his Greek and Egyptian subjects. The Serapeum at Alexandria, the temple of Serapis, became one of the grandest buildings in the city. Whether Serapis actually succeeded in unifying Greek and Egyptian worship or simply created a parallel Greek-flavored cult alongside the existing Egyptian religion is debated, but the attempt itself reveals the central challenge of Ptolemaic rule: how to be Greek rulers of an Egyptian kingdom without alienating either Greeks or Egyptians.

The Egyptian priest Manetho (pronounced "MAN-eh-tho"), writing around 280 BCE under Ptolemaic patronage, composed the Aegyptiaca (History of Egypt), a Greek-language chronicle that organized Egyptian history into the system of thirty dynasties that Egyptologists still use today. Manetho was a bridge figure: an Egyptian priest who wrote in Greek for a Greek audience, translating three thousand years of pharaonic tradition into a framework that the new rulers could understand. His work survives only in fragments quoted by later writers, but its dynasty system became the standard organizational framework for Egyptian chronology.

Eratosthenes (pronounced "air-ah-TOS-then-eez"), the chief librarian at Alexandria in the mid-third century BCE, calculated the circumference of the Earth by comparing the angle of the sun's shadow at noon in Alexandria and Syene (modern Aswan). His result was remarkably close to the correct value. He could not have done it without Egyptian geography: he needed two cities separated by a known distance along a north-south line, and Egypt's long narrow Nile Valley provided exactly that. The calculation is one of the great intellectual achievements of antiquity, and it was made possible by the combination of Greek theoretical mathematics and Egyptian practical geography.

The Rosetta Stone (196 BCE, a decree of Ptolemy V inscribed in hieroglyphs, demotic, and Greek) would eventually provide the key to deciphering hieroglyphs when it was discovered by Napoleon's soldiers in 1799. The stone is a perfect symbol of Ptolemaic Egypt: a single message written in three scripts because no single language commanded everyone's loyalty, a country that was simultaneously Egyptian, Egyptian-in-translation, and Greek.

The last Ptolemaic ruler, Cleopatra VII (reigned 51 to 30 BCE), was the first in nearly three hundred years of Ptolemaic rule who could actually speak Egyptian. She allied with Julius Caesar and then with Mark Antony, using Roman patronage to try to preserve Egyptian independence. Her defeat at the Battle of Actium (31 BCE) and subsequent suicide ended the Ptolemaic Dynasty and made Egypt a province of the Roman Empire. Three thousand years of pharaonic rule, under native Egyptians, Libyans, Nubians, Persians, and Greeks, ended in 30 BCE.

But that is not this story. This narrative's proper subject is the Late Period, the period of native Egyptian resilience between the Saite Renaissance and Alexander's arrival. The next two chapters examine the cultural forces that made that resilience possible, and what survived the conquests.
