There are not many cities in human history that you can say with confidence were the largest, most populous, and most culturally important on Earth at a specific moment. Tang Chang'an in the early 8th century is one of them.

The numbers matter, so it's worth pausing on them. Chang'an covered approximately 32 square miles (84 km²) inside its walls — the inner walled city alone was about seven times the size of contemporary Constantinople, the largest city in Europe at the time, and roughly five times the area of Baghdad after the Abbasids built it in the 760s. The walls themselves were about 18 miles (29 km) in circumference. The central north-south avenue, Zhuque Boulevard, was 150 meters wide — nearly 500 feet, broader than any street in any modern city. The population at peak is estimated at over a million inside the walls, with another million in the suburbs and surrounding districts. By comparison, contemporary Constantinople probably held 300,000–500,000; Baghdad after its 762 founding would briefly approach the same range; Rome at its imperial peak had reached around a million but had collapsed to perhaps 50,000 by the 8th century. Tang Chang'an in 700–750 was the largest and most populous city on Earth, and was probably the largest city the world had ever seen up to that point.

It was also, by a significant margin, the most cosmopolitan.

The grid-plan structure of Chang'an, inherited from Yuwen Kai's Sui-era Daxing (Chapter 1), was a perfect machine for managing a multicultural population. The 108 walled wards — each a city block surrounded by its own internal walls with gates that closed at curfew — could be assigned to specific communities. Foreign quarters, religious enclaves, and residential districts for different social classes all had their own ward or cluster of wards. This was social engineering by urban planning.

The foreign communities were extensive and visible. Sogdian merchants from Central Asia (Iranian-speaking traders, the dominant intermediaries of Silk Road commerce) had their own quarters — Sogdian-named families show up routinely in Tang tax records, court documents, and tomb inscriptions. Persian refugees and merchants formed substantial communities, particularly after the Sassanid Empire fell to the Arab Muslim conquest in the 650s (Persian Empire Ch 10) and the last Sassanid prince Peroz III fled east to seek Tang protection. Arab merchants arrived after the establishment of the Umayyad and then Abbasid caliphates, traveling the Silk Road and the southern sea route. Indian Buddhist monks and scholars came overland through the Tarim Basin or by sea through the southern ports. Korean students came in numbers — the Tang court ran what was essentially an international university for sons of Korean and Japanese aristocrats — and Japanese delegations came on the periodic embassies known as the kentōshi (Ancient Japan Ch 7), spending years studying Tang government, law, art, and Buddhism before returning home.

The religions present in Chang'an reflected this. Buddhism was by far the most influential foreign religion, having arrived from India centuries earlier (Six Dynasties Ch 5) and now fully integrated into Chinese life. But the city also hosted Zoroastrian fire temples, Nestorian Christian churches (the Christian community even put up a stele in 781, the Nestorian Stele, recording the arrival of Christianity in 635 under Taizong — an extraordinary document that astonished European missionaries when it was rediscovered in 1625, since they had assumed they were bringing Christianity to China for the first time), Manichaean shrines (Manichaeism was a Persian religion that survived in Central Asia long after dying out in Persia itself), and Islamic mosques following the establishment of regular Muslim merchant communities in the 7th and 8th centuries.

This was not religious tolerance in the modern liberal sense. The Tang state regulated foreign religions, restricted certain kinds of conversion, and would in 845 launch a major persecution of Buddhism (Chapter 4). What the Tang state did do, especially in the High Tang period, was permit foreign communities to maintain their own religious institutions in their own neighborhoods on the assumption that this kept them stable and their merchants productive. The framework was pragmatic, not principled. It produced something like the most religiously diverse single city in the early-medieval world.

The economic engine driving all this was the Silk Road at its historical peak.

The "Silk Road" is a name coined by the 19th-century German geographer Ferdinand von Richthofen (a useful one-line intro: he was a Berlin geographer who traveled extensively in China in the 1860s–70s and named the trade network Seidenstrasse in an 1877 publication). It was not a single road but a network of overland and maritime trade routes connecting China to Central Asia, Persia, and the Mediterranean. The network had operated since the Han dynasty (Han Dynasty Ch 5), when Chinese diplomatic missions had first opened direct contact with the Central Asian kingdoms. It had been disrupted during the Six Dynasties chaos. The Tang military expansion into the Tarim Basin in the 630s–650s, and the establishment of the Anxi Protectorate (the Tang military command zone covering the four great oasis cities of Kucha, Khotan, Kashgar, and Karashahr) gave Chinese armies direct control over the Silk Road oases for the first time since the Han.

What flowed through the network is worth pausing on. From China westward: silk (China was the only producer of silk for centuries, and silk remained an enormous luxury throughout the Mediterranean world), porcelain, paper, lacquerware, and silver. Eastward from Central Asia, Persia, and beyond: horses (Tang armies depended on imported horses for cavalry, and the Tang state ran an enormous bureaucracy just to manage the horse trade), gemstones, glassware (Tang Chinese glassblowing was minimal; almost all glass was imported from Persia or further west), spices, aromatic woods, exotic foods, musical instruments, and slaves. The trade was conducted primarily by Sogdian merchants speaking the Sogdian language, which served as the lingua franca of Silk Road commerce. Sogdian-language documents have been found from China to the Black Sea. (Sogdian is now extinct as a spoken language; its closest modern relative is Yaghnobi, spoken by a few thousand people in the mountains of Tajikistan.)

The cultural traffic was as significant as the goods. Central Asian music, dance, food, fashion, and art flooded into Tang Chang'an. The pipa (a four-string lute) is a Central Asian instrument that Chinese musicians adopted and that became a defining sound of Chinese classical music. The whirling dances of the Sogdian and Central Asian performers (one famous example: An Lushan, of whom more shortly, was reportedly an enormously fat man — over 300 pounds — whose performance of Sogdian whirling dances delighted Emperor Xuanzong's court) became standard entertainment at imperial banquets. Tang ceramic figurines from this period preserve a remarkable visual record of the era: Bactrian camels loaded with goods accompanied by bearded Sogdian merchants, foreign musicians playing Central Asian instruments, dancers in foreign dress, foreign ambassadors in their distinctive costumes. These figurines are the single best surviving record of how visibly multicultural Chang'an was — the sancai (san-TSIGH, "three-color") glazed Tang figurines in amber, green, and cream are among the most recognizable Tang artifacts.

The maritime trade route — through the South China Sea, the Strait of Malacca, the Indian Ocean, and on to East Africa — was also active by the High Tang, particularly through the southern ports of Guangzhou (gwang-JOH) and Quanzhou (chwen-JOH). Arab merchants established communities in Guangzhou by the late 7th century; by 879 the Arab community in Guangzhou would number in the tens of thousands (with disastrous consequences in that year — Chapter 4). The maritime route would become dominant after the An Lushan Rebellion disrupted the overland Silk Road, and would peak under the Song (Chapter 8).

The cultural product the Tang is most remembered for is poetry.

Tang poetry occupies a position in Chinese culture roughly comparable to what Shakespeare occupies in English — except that the Tang produced about a dozen poets of comparable stature rather than one, and the result is that contemporary Chinese schoolchildren memorize hundreds of Tang poems through their education. Two figures dominate the canon, and they have been paired in Chinese literary criticism for over a thousand years: Li Bai (lee BIGH) and Du Fu (doo FOO).

Li Bai (701–762), called the Immortal Poet (Shixian — SHEE-shyen), was the wild one. He was probably born in Central Asia to a Chinese family — there are theories that his family had Sogdian or Turkic connections, though the evidence is thin — and grew up in what is now Sichuan. He never sat the civil service examinations and never had a stable government career; instead he wandered China as a Daoist-influenced poet, drinking, writing, occasionally appearing at court (he had a brief stint as a court poet under Xuanzong before being dismissed for, depending on the source, drunkenness or arrogance or political missteps), and dying in obscurity. Legend says he drowned trying to embrace the moon's reflection in a river while drunk; the reality was probably more prosaic.

His poetry is what survives him. Li Bai wrote with an apparent effortlessness on subjects like wine, moonlight, friendship, the natural world, and the sense of cosmic isolation that comes from being a human in a vast universe. His best-known poem, "Quiet Night Thought" (床前明月光, Chuangqian mingyue guang), runs only twenty characters in Chinese — about a paragraph in English translation. It is probably the most widely memorized Chinese poem ever written; virtually every Chinese schoolchild can recite it. Its surface is minimal. Its emotional reach is enormous. The combination of formal compression and emotional vastness is the Li Bai signature.

Du Fu (712–770), called the Poet Sage (Shisheng — SHEE-shung), was the disciplined one. He came from a family of scholars, sat the examinations and failed (multiple times — Du Fu's examination failures became part of his legend), spent much of his adult life in poverty, and lived through the An Lushan Rebellion as a refugee. The catastrophe of those years shaped his work permanently. Where Li Bai writes about cosmic isolation, Du Fu writes about national tragedy: families torn apart by war, peasants conscripted to die in border campaigns, the spring view from his windowsill turning into a meditation on dynastic collapse. His poem "Spring View" (春望, Chun wang) — written in 757, after the An Lushan rebels had captured Chang'an and Du Fu was trapped in the occupied city — opens with the characters 国破山河在 (the country is broken; the mountains and rivers remain). It is one of the most quoted lines in all of Chinese literature.

Du Fu also perfected the formal technical structure of Chinese poetry. The form called lüshi (LOO-shr — "regulated verse") is a strict eight-line poem with rigid rules about tonal patterns and parallelism between paired lines; Du Fu was its supreme practitioner, and "Du Fu lüshi" became the benchmark against which all later regulated verse was measured.

The pairing of Li Bai and Du Fu — the wild Daoist transcendentalist and the disciplined Confucian witness, the sky and the earth, the wine cup and the conscience — became the structuring frame for how Chinese literary tradition organized its understanding of poetry. They knew each other (briefly) in person; Du Fu wrote multiple poems for and about Li Bai, in tones of deep affection and deeper anxiety about Li Bai's drinking and instability. The friendship is one of the most touching footnotes in Chinese literary history, two of the greatest poets in any language each writing about the other.

Tang poetry is enormous — the standard Complete Tang Poetry compiled in 1705 contains over 48,000 poems by more than 2,200 authors — and Li Bai and Du Fu are only the two most famous of dozens of major figures. Wang Wei (701–761) was a court official who wrote spare, Chan-Buddhist-influenced landscape poetry that paired with his work as a painter (Wang Wei is sometimes considered the founder of Chinese literati landscape Painting, though most of his actual paintings have been lost). Bai Juyi (BIGH joo-EE, 772–846) wrote in a deliberately accessible style — legend has it he read his drafts aloud to an illiterate elderly servant and revised anything she could not understand, which is probably an exaggeration but captures something true about his voice. His 120-line narrative poem "Song of Everlasting Sorrow" (长恨歌, Changhen ge), about Emperor Xuanzong's love affair with Yang Guifei and her death during the An Lushan Rebellion, is one of the most famous poems in the language. Bai Juyi was also enormously influential abroad — his collected works arrived in Japan within his own lifetime and shaped the Tale of Genji (the great Heian-period Japanese novel of around 1010) and centuries of Japanese poetry.

The structural reason Tang poetry exploded in this period was partly the examination system: composing regulated verse on assigned topics was a required component of the jinshi exam, which meant that every educated man in the empire — every aspiring official, every gentleman-scholar — was practicing poetry as a professional skill from his teenage years onward. This produced a vast amateur poetic culture out of which the great geniuses emerged. The structural reason it eventually mattered globally is that the Chinese examination model was eventually adopted by Korea (Gwageo), Vietnam, and Japan (the Heian court adopted Chinese-style exams in modified form), spreading Tang literary forms and conventions throughout East Asia.

Beyond poetry, the High Tang produced equally important developments in religion, calligraphy, and visual art.

Chan Buddhism (CHAHN — pronounced "chan" in Chinese, transmitted to Japan as Zen, to Korea as Seon, to Vietnam as Thiền) crystallized as a distinctly Chinese school during the Tang. Its tradition traced its lineage back to Bodhidharma (a monk said to have arrived from India in the early 6th century, though his historicity is debated; Six Dynasties Ch 5), but its mature form developed over the 7th and 8th centuries. Chan emphasized meditation (chan is the Chinese pronunciation of the Sanskrit dhyana, "meditation") and the possibility of sudden enlightenment through direct experience rather than through textual study or accumulated merit. The Sixth Patriarch Huineng (HWAY-nung, c. 638–713) is the foundational Chan figure; his Platform Sutra, supposedly recorded by his disciples after his death, is the only Chinese-composed text accorded the status of "sutra" (a word normally reserved for the discourses of the historical Buddha himself). Chan would survive the Tang's anti-Buddhist persecution (Chapter 4) better than most Buddhist schools precisely because it required minimal institutional infrastructure — no large monasteries, no expensive liturgical equipment, just teacher-student transmission. Chan would shape East Asian aesthetics for the next thousand years through its influence on tea ceremony, garden design, ink-painting, and martial arts.

Calligraphy reached one of its peaks in the Tang. Yan Zhenqing (YEN jen-CHING, 709–785) developed a bold, structured style of regular script (kaishu) that broke from the elegant lyrical tradition of the great Six Dynasties calligrapher Wang Xizhi (Wang Xee-JEH, 303–361, often called the "Sage of Calligraphy" — Six Dynasties Ch 4). Yan's "muscular" style emphasized structural integrity over delicacy. He was also a model Confucian scholar-official: he organized military resistance to the An Lushan rebels in the northeast, served the Tang faithfully through decades of crises, and was finally executed at age seventy-six by a regional warlord rebel for refusing to defect. The combination of artistic mastery and personal integrity made Yan Zhenqing the Confucian ideal of a scholar-official in posterity, and his calligraphic style became one of the four standard models taught in Chinese schools for over a millennium.

Painting developed under the Tang in directions that the Song would extend (Chapter 8). Tang painters worked in colored mineral pigments on silk, with a specialty in horse paintings (the Tang court's Central Asian horses were prestige objects and frequent subjects), figure paintings, and decorative court scenes. The shift to monochrome ink and to the dominant Chinese genre of monumental shanshui (mountains-and-water) landscape painting would happen under the Song.

pottery is one of the era's most globally recognizable products. The sancai (three-color) glazed ceramics of the Tang — usually camels, horses, court ladies, foreign musicians, and tomb guardians, glazed in amber, green, and cream — are among the most distinctive Tang artifacts. They have been found across Eurasia. The Belitung shipwreck, an Arab dhow that sank around 830 in the Java Sea while carrying Tang export ceramics back to the Middle East, contained over 60,000 pieces, including bowls, dishes, ewers, and the earliest known Chinese blue-and-white porcelain (which would later become the global signature of Chinese ceramics under the Yuan and Ming). The English word "china" for porcelain comes from this trade. Tang ceramics established the global demand for Chinese pottery that would define international trade for the next thousand years, and that would eventually drive the Ming to mass-produce blue-and-white for European markets seven centuries later.

A pause, before the catastrophe.

The High Tang of Xuanzong's Kaiyuan era (713–741) is one of those moments in human history that produces more than its fair share of cultural heritage. China had been reunified for 150 years by Xuanzong's reign and was at peace internally. The economy was prosperous. The military had pushed Chinese influence further west than at any point in history. The capital was the largest city in the world and the most multicultural city in pre-modern Eurasia. The poetry, calligraphy, ceramics, music, and Buddhism of the era are still actively quoted, performed, and practiced in modern China. There is a reason the Kaiyuan reign is the moment Chinese cultural memory returns to most often.

It is also the case that this moment was created by structural conditions that would not last. The equal-field land system was already breaking down — the chronicles of the 740s record growing problems with private estates, falling tax revenues, and the corruption of local administration. The frontier military system had drifted from the Sui-era model of fubing militia farmers to professional standing armies under regional military governors called jiedushi (jyeh-DOO-shr — "military commissioners"), each commanding tens of thousands of professional soldiers. The court was dominated by Yang Guifei's family faction (her cousin Yang Guozhong rose to become chancellor) in growing conflict with the most powerful jiedushi, An Lushan, whose three frontier commands in the northeast controlled over 160,000 troops. The fiscal cost of the standing armies was enormous, and the Tang had no good way to control commanders who controlled their own soldiers, payrolls, and supply networks.

Xuanzong, by the 740s and 750s, was in his sixties and increasingly disengaged. He had been a vigorous reformist emperor in his early decades; in his later years, he delegated. The combination — failing land system, restive professional armies, weak central control, factional war at court — was exactly the recipe for the catastrophe that arrived in December 755.

Cross-civ check: the High Tang Chang'an of the early 8th century is contemporary with the Umayyad Caliphate at its peak, with Damascus as its capital and territory from Spain to Central Asia. The Umayyads would be overthrown by the Abbasid Caliphate in 750 (Islamic Golden Age Ch 1), shifting the Islamic capital east to Baghdad (founded 762). The Abbasid Baghdad of the 8th–9th century would briefly approach Chang'an in size and would inherit the cosmopolitan-trade-network position the Tang was about to lose. The Byzantine Empire under the Isaurian dynasty was wracked by the Iconoclast controversy over religious images (Byzantine Empire Ch 5). The Carolingian dynasty in western Europe was consolidating under Charles Martel (defeated the Arabs at Tours in 732) and his grandson Charlemagne (crowned Holy Roman Emperor in 800). In Mesoamerica, the great Maya city of Tikal was at its peak (Maya Civilization Ch 6). In the Andes, the Wari and Tiwanaku empires were dominating their respective regions. The 8th century Eurasian world was unusually densely interconnected — the silk that left Tang Chang'an reached Constantinople and Baghdad and was traded onward to Carolingian Europe, while Buddhist and Islamic ideas circulated along the same routes — and Tang Chang'an was the eastern anchor of the system.

The system was about to break.
