Around 980 BCE, a king named Hiram I (HY-ram; ruled approximately 980-947 BCE) came to the throne of Tyre and turned his city into the richest, most powerful Phoenician state the coast had ever produced. Hiram did not conquer an empire. He built a commercial network so profitable that it made Tyre indispensable to every major power in the region, and he did it during a window of opportunity that would not stay open long.

That window existed because, in the late eleventh and early tenth centuries BCE, none of the great powers were paying attention to the Levant. Egypt was weak, divided between competing dynasties in the north and south. Assyria was confined to its heartland, fighting off Aramean encroachments (Assyrian Empire Ch 3). Babylon was in decline. The Hittites were gone. Into this vacuum, two small but ambitious kingdoms in the Levant were building power: Hiram's Tyre on the coast, and, in the hill country just inland, the Kingdom of Israel under Kings David and Solomon. The partnership between Hiram and Solomon became one of the most famous alliances in the ancient world, celebrated in the Hebrew Bible and referenced by virtually every later writer who discussed Phoenicia.

According to the biblical account (and supported by independent historical plausibility, though the exact details are debated), Hiram supplied Solomon with cedar wood, skilled craftsmen, and luxury goods for the construction of the First Temple in Jerusalem, the central shrine of Israelite religion. Solomon, in turn, provided Hiram with agricultural products (wheat and olive oil from Israel's hill-country farms) and, more importantly, with land access to the trade routes running south to the Red Sea and the wealthy kingdoms of Arabia. The two kings may have jointly operated a fleet based at Ezion-Geber (EH-zee-on GEH-ber; a port on the Gulf of Aqaba, at the northern tip of the Red Sea), trading with the land of Ophir (location debated: possibly southern Arabia, East Africa, or western India) for gold, precious stones, and exotic goods. The profits from this Red Sea trade made both kings wealthy, and the Temple that Hiram's craftsmen built for Solomon became the defining symbol of Israelite (and later Jewish) religion, destroyed and rebuilt and destroyed again over the following millennium. Hiram's construction crews did not know they were building one of the most symbolically important structures in human history. They were filling a contract.

Hiram also built at home. His most significant domestic project was the great Temple of Melqart (MEL-kart) at Tyre. Melqart (the name probably means "king of the city") was the patron god of Tyre, a deity associated with the sea, with trade, with colonial expansion, and with an annual death-and-resurrection cycle that echoed the broader Canaanite pattern of dying-and-rising gods (Chapter 1). The Temple of Melqart at Tyre became one of the most important religious centers in the ancient Mediterranean. Greek visitors later identified Melqart with their own hero Heracles (Hercules), and the temple attracted pilgrims from across the Mediterranean world for centuries. When the Phoenicians founded colonies, they founded temples to Melqart. The cult of Melqart was, in a sense, the religious glue that held the Phoenician colonial world together, connecting distant outposts like Cádiz and Carthage back to their mother city of Tyre.

The god Melqart's annual ritual was vivid and public. Each year, the god was ritually "killed" (how exactly is debated: some scholars interpret the ritual as an actual burning of an effigy or statue, others as a symbolic death enacted through priestly performance) and then "awakened" or "resurrected" in a spring ceremony called the egersis (eh-GAIR-sis). The cycle mirrored the agricultural seasons: the god died with the vegetation in late summer and returned with the rains in spring. Similar dying-and-rising god myths existed across the ancient Near East: the Mesopotamian Tammuz (Dumuzi), the Egyptian Osiris, and the Byblian Adonis (the Greek version of the Phoenician word adon, meaning "lord"), whose cult centered at Byblos involved annual mourning rituals during which, according to Greek writers, the river near the city ran red (probably from seasonal iron-rich soil runoff, interpreted as the god's blood). These cults were not carbon copies of each other, but they drew on a shared cultural logic: the frightening annual death of the natural world, and the reassuring promise that it would return.

Astarte (ah-STAR-tay), goddess of love, war, and fertility, was the chief deity of Sidon and one of the most widely worshipped Phoenician goddesses across the Mediterranean. She was Sidon's equivalent of Tyre's Melqart: the divine patron, the city's protector, the focus of the most elaborate temple rituals. Astarte was closely related to the Mesopotamian Ishtar and the Sumerian Inanna (the same fundamental goddess filtered through different Semitic languages and cultural contexts), and Greek visitors identified her with Aphrodite. When Phoenician colonists spread across the Mediterranean, they carried the worship of Astarte with them, establishing temples at Kition on Cyprus, at Carthage, at colonies in Sicily, Sardinia, and Spain. Greek and Roman writers described elaborate temple rituals involving sacred prostitution, though modern scholars are deeply divided on whether these accounts reflect actual Phoenician practice or Greek misunderstanding (or deliberate sensationalizing) of foreign religious customs involving female cult personnel.

The Phoenician economy in Hiram's era rested on several pillars, and the most famous was Tyrian purple. The dye that gave the Phoenicians their Greek name was extracted from murex sea snails (specifically Bolinus brandaris and Hexaplex trunculus), small shellfish found in rocky coastal waters throughout the Mediterranean. The extraction process was laborious, smelly, and enormously profitable. Workers cracked open the shells, removed a tiny mucus-producing gland (the hypobranchial gland, located behind the snail's head), and collected the secretion in stone vats. Fresh, the secretion was yellowish-green and unremarkable. But when exposed to sunlight and air, it underwent a chemical reaction (a photochemical transformation of the molecule 6,6'-dibromoindigo, for the chemically curious) that turned it through stages of green, blue, and finally a deep reddish-purple that was colorfast, meaning it did not fade with washing. The color actually deepened over time, growing more vivid with exposure to light rather than less.

The problem was volume. Each snail yielded a single tiny drop of the precursor fluid. Producing one gram of finished dye required something on the order of 10,000 snails (the exact figure varies in modern reconstructions, but the order of magnitude is consistently staggering). The archaeological evidence for this scale is not subtle: massive deposits of crushed murex shells, some tens of feet deep, have been found along the coast at Sidon and at other Phoenician sites. The smell of rotting snail flesh during the extraction process was apparently atrocious. Ancient writers consistently describe the stench as one of the worst things about Phoenician coastal cities.

The resulting dye was so expensive that it became the ultimate status symbol. Purple cloth was reserved, in practice and eventually by law, for royalty and the highest elites. The Roman Senate would later restrict the wearing of purple to the emperor alone (the phrase "born to the purple" comes from this tradition). The connection between purple and royalty is Phoenician in origin, and it persists today in the symbolic associations of the color. A pound of purple-dyed wool cost roughly as much as a pound of silver. Tyre's virtual monopoly on the highest-quality purple dye made the city fabulously wealthy, and the dye industry remained a Tyrian specialty for centuries. The Byzantine Empire would eventually inherit and continue the Phoenician tradition, making Tyrian purple the exclusive mark of imperial dignity for nine hundred years — the expression "born in the purple" (porphyrogennetos) describing a prince born to a reigning emperor literally referred to the purple-draped imperial birthing room in Constantinople (Byzantine Empire Ch 2 and Ch 6).

But Tyre's economy was diversified well beyond purple. Sidonian glassmaking (centered at Sidon but practiced across the Phoenician coast) produced some of the ancient world's finest glass vessels. Phoenician glassworkers pioneered techniques for producing transparent and colored glass, and their products were exported throughout the Mediterranean. Glassblowing (the technique of inflating molten glass on the end of a hollow pipe) would not be invented until much later, around the first century BCE, probably in the Sidon-Tyre region. The earlier Phoenician glass was core-formed: molten glass was wound around a clay core, shaped, decorated with colored glass threads, and then the core was scraped out after cooling. The results were small, intricate, and expensive.

Phoenician ivory carving became another prestige export. Phoenician artisans carved elephant ivory (sourced from both African and Syrian elephants, the latter a now-extinct subspecies that once ranged across the northern Levant) into intricate plaques, furniture inlays, boxes, and decorative panels. The style blended Egyptian motifs (lotus flowers, sphinxes, winged sun-disks) with Mesopotamian and local Levantine elements, producing a distinctive hybrid aesthetic that was prized across the ancient Near East. Thousands of Phoenician ivories have been excavated from the Assyrian palaces at Nimrud (Assyrian Empire Ch 4), where they were stockpiled as tribute and war booty. These ivory carvings are some of the finest small-scale artwork to survive from the ancient world.

Phoenician metalwork in bronze, gold, and silver was equally sought after. Phoenician smiths produced decorated bronze bowls, incense stands, and ritual vessels that combined Egyptian and Mesopotamian artistic traditions and were exported across the Mediterranean as luxury goods and diplomatic gifts. The Phoenicians were not just traders. They were manufacturers, and their workshops produced a distinctive, high-quality, cosmopolitan style that was recognizable from Spain to Mesopotamia.

This cosmopolitan quality was itself distinctive. Phoenician art blended motifs from every civilization the Phoenicians traded with, creating a hybrid aesthetic that modern scholars sometimes call "international style." An ivory plaque carved in Tyre might combine an Egyptian sphinx, a Mesopotamian sacred tree, and a local Levantine geometric border. A bronze bowl from Sidon might depict an Egyptian pharaoh in a composition framed by Assyrian-style winged genii. The Phoenicians did not simply copy foreign art. They synthesized it, producing objects that belonged to no single tradition and were salable everywhere. This eclecticism was not a lack of originality. It was a commercial strategy: a Phoenician luxury object appealed to customers in Egypt, Assyria, Greece, and the western Mediterranean precisely because it contained visual references that each audience could recognize.

After Hiram's death around 947 BCE, Tyre passed through a period of internal instability. Several kings were assassinated or overthrown. Then, around 887 BCE, a priest of Astarte named Ithobaal I (ih-THOH-bah-al; sometimes spelled Ethbaal) seized the throne and united the cities of Tyre and Sidon under a single rule for the first time. Ithobaal expanded Phoenician territory, founded new settlements, and pursued an aggressive foreign policy that included marriage alliances with neighboring kingdoms.

The most famous of these alliances was the marriage of Ithobaal's daughter Jezebel (JEZ-uh-bel) to Ahab (AY-hab), king of the northern Kingdom of Israel (the Israelite state had split into two kingdoms, Israel in the north and Judah in the south, after Solomon's death around 930 BCE). Jezebel is one of the most vilified figures in the Hebrew Bible, portrayed as a foreign queen who introduced the worship of Baal into Israel, persecuted the prophets of Yahweh, and ultimately died a gruesome death (thrown from a window, trampled by horses, eaten by dogs, according to the Book of Kings). The biblical authors despised her because she represented the infiltration of Phoenician religion into Israelite society, a threat to the exclusive worship of Yahweh that the biblical writers championed.

From a Phoenician perspective, the marriage was simply standard diplomatic practice. Marriages between royal families cemented alliances, and the alliance between Tyre-Sidon and Israel served both kingdoms' interests: Israel got access to Phoenician trade networks and Mediterranean commerce; Tyre got access to Israel's overland trade routes and agricultural production. Jezebel's promotion of Baal worship in Israel was, from her perspective, the normal expression of royal piety: a queen worshipped her own gods and patronized their cults, as queens had always done across the ancient Near East. That this perfectly conventional behavior made her one of the great villains of biblical literature tells us more about the biblical writers' theological program than about Jezebel herself.

The Phoenicians also innovated in navigation during this period. Phoenician sailors navigated by the stars, specifically by Ursa Minor (the Little Bear, or the Little Dipper), rather than by Ursa Major (the Great Bear, or the Big Dipper) used by Greek sailors. Ursa Minor contains Polaris (well, a star very close to where Polaris sits today; the celestial pole shifts slowly over millennia due to the precession of Earth's axis), the star closest to true north, making it a more accurate navigational reference than the larger but less precisely positioned Great Bear. The technique was so identified with the Phoenicians that the Greeks called Ursa Minor "the Phoenician" constellation. This gave Phoenician navigators an edge in open-water sailing: they could hold a more accurate course during night passages, when coastlines were invisible and the stars were the only reference points.

But the golden age was ending. In 842 BCE, an Assyrian king named Shalmaneser III (Assyrian Empire Ch 4) forced Tyre and Sidon to pay heavy tribute, beginning a long era of Phoenician subjugation to Mesopotamian empires. The age of Phoenician independence was over. Chapter 6 will trace that subjugation in detail. But before the empires closed in, the Phoenicians had already planted the seeds of their most enduring achievement: a network of colonies that would span the entire Mediterranean and outlast Phoenicia itself.
