The man who founded Korea's medieval dynasty was a merchant before he was a king, and it shows in everything he did.

To understand him you have to start with the wreck he climbed out of. For most of the previous three centuries the Korean peninsula, a mountainous arm of land about the size of the island of Great Britain, or the U.S. state of Minnesota, hanging off the northeast corner of the Asian mainland, had been ruled by a single kingdom called Silla (SHILL-ah). Silla had unified the peninsula in 668 by destroying its two rivals, the northern kingdom of Goguryeo (go-GOOR-yuh) and the southwestern kingdom of Baekje (BECK-jeh), with the armies and fleets of Tang China (the long, brilliant Chinese dynasty that ran from 618 to 907; Tang–Song China). Tang did not help for free, and Silla then had to fight its own former ally off the peninsula for decades to avoid simply becoming a Tang province. That older three-way world, and Silla's costly victory in it, is the story of the previous TL (Ancient Korea Ch 8). What matters here is how Silla ended.

It ended of dry rot. Silla society was frozen by the bone-rank system, a hereditary caste order so rigid that a man's birth set not just his office but the size of his house, the rank of woman he could marry, and the color of his clothes for life. At the very top sat a closed circle of "true-bone" aristocrats who alone could hold the highest offices. By the late 800s those families were murdering their own kings in palace coups while the countryside slid out of the government's hands. Local strongmen, some of them landed gentry, some bandit chiefs, some monks with private armies, stopped sending taxes and started calling themselves kings. By around 900 the peninsula had cracked back into three pieces, a period Korean historians call the Later Three Kingdoms, consciously echoing the ancient three-kingdom age.

Two of the three new kingdoms were the work of remarkable, terrifying men.

In the southwest, a peasant-born general named Gyeon Hwon (gyun HWON) carved out a state in 892 and revived the proud old name of Baekje, calling it Later Baekje. Gyeon Hwon was a gifted, brutal soldier whose chief political instinct was the frontal assault. In the north, an even stranger figure rose: Gung Ye (goong YEH), reputedly a discarded prince of the Silla royal house, raised in a monastery, blind in one eye, and convinced he was the Maitreya, the future Buddha prophesied to be reborn into the world to save it. (Maitreya belief was widespread across East Asian Buddhism; a ruler claiming to be the Maitreya was a way of fusing religious salvation with political legitimacy, and Gung Ye was not the last East Asian rebel to try it.) Gung Ye founded a northern kingdom and, after a couple of renamings, called it Taebong. He was, by every surviving account, a paranoid sadist who eventually had his own wife and sons killed and executed officials on the spot for "reading his mind."

The third man worked for Gung Ye. His name was Wang Geon (wahng GUN), and he was not a prince or a monk or a bandit. He came from Songak (SONG-ahk), a port town on the Yeseong River near the west coast, from a family that had grown rich on maritime trade, moving goods by ship up and down the Yellow Sea coast and across to China. This is the single most important fact about him. Where Gyeon Hwon thought like an infantry general and Gung Ye thought like a cult leader, Wang Geon thought like a merchant: in terms of networks, alliances, reputation, and the long game. He served Gung Ye as a naval commander and was very good at it, taking territory along the coast and the islands.

In 918 Gung Ye's own top generals, exhausted by his terror, mutinied and offered the throne to Wang Geon. He took it, took the royal title Taejo (TAY-joh, "Great Founder," the temple name later given to the founding king of essentially every Korean dynasty), and named his kingdom Goryeo (KOR-yuh).

That name is the hinge of this entire book, so it is worth slowing down. "Goryeo" is a shortened form of "Goguryeo," the ancient northern kingdom that Silla and Tang China had destroyed 250 years earlier. By naming his new state Goryeo, Wang Geon was making a deliberate, aggressive historical claim: that he was the rightful heir not of decadent Silla but of mighty Goguryeo, whose old territory stretched far north into what is now Manchuria. It was a propaganda program disguised as a name, and it set the dynasty's northern ambitions for centuries. It also did something Wang Geon could not have foreseen. Arab and Persian merchants trading along the China coast picked up the kingdom's name, rendered it in their own tongues, and carried it west along the trade routes. By way of Marco Polo's "Cauli" and a long chain of European mapmakers, "Goryeo" became "Corea," then "Korea." The peninsula has had many native names; the one the rest of the world settled on is the brand of this one dynasty. Every time anyone anywhere says "Korea," they are saying a slightly worn-down version of "Goguryeo," because a tenth-century shipping magnate wanted to borrow an ancient kingdom's prestige.

To anchor 918 in the wider world: China's Tang dynasty had collapsed eleven years earlier into the warring patchwork historians call the Five Dynasties (Tang–Song China), and it is from that mid-collapse China that Goryeo will shortly borrow its statecraft (Chapter 2). The Fatimid Caliphate had just been founded in North Africa in 909. In Europe, Viking fleets were raiding and settling from England to the rivers of Russia (Viking Age), the Carolingian empire was disintegrating, and the one large, orderly power was the Byzantine Empire near its Macedonian height (Byzantine Empire). Goryeo was founded into the same generation that produced the Kievan Rus' and watched the last Carolingians fade.

Wang Geon's first practical decision was a merchant's decision: he moved the capital. Gung Ye had ruled from an inland fortress town; Wang Geon moved the seat of government to his own home base, the port of Songak, renamed it Gaegyeong (GEH-gyung), and made it the capital. The city is the modern Kaesong, just north of today's inter-Korean border. It would be the heart of the dynasty for the next 470 years, and its choice was not sentimental. Gaegyeong sat near the coast, plugged into the sea-trade network Wang Geon's family had built, and was defensible. A capital chosen by a man who understood that wealth and information move by water.

He also acted on the Goguryeo claim immediately. He resettled and fortified the long-ruined city of Pyongyang (the modern North Korean capital), made it a second, "Western" capital, and used it as the forward base for a lifelong policy of pushing the northern frontier outward toward the old Goguryeo lands. That northern obsession will drive events for the next four hundred years and end, in Chapter 8, with an army that refuses to march.

Then, in 926, the policy got a brutal piece of confirmation. Far to the north, a Manchurian kingdom called Balhae (BAL-heh), itself founded by refugees from fallen Goguryeo, and so, in Goryeo's eyes, a lost cousin, was annihilated. The people who destroyed it were the Khitan (KEE-tahn), a nomadic horse-people of the northern steppes whose newly founded Liao empire is the subject of the next chapter. Tens of thousands of Balhae refugees, including its crown prince, fled south into Goryeo, and Wang Geon took them in deliberately, treating Balhae's fall as a family wound and the Khitan as a permanent enemy. He once sent fifty camels, a gift from the Khitan, to starve to death under a bridge, and exiled the envoys, by way of diplomatic reply. The reader should file the Khitan away here; they come back with an army in Chapter 3.

Founding a kingdom was the easy part. The peninsula still had three kingdoms in it, and the next eighteen years were spent reducing that number to one.

The war with Gyeon Hwon's Later Baekje was long and nearly fatal. In 927 Gyeon Hwon ambushed Wang Geon's army near modern Daegu at the Battle of Gongsan and very nearly killed him. Wang Geon escaped only because his general Sin Sung-gyeom (shin SOONG-gyum) put on the king's distinctive armor, drew the enemy onto himself, and died in Wang Geon's place, a sacrifice Goryeo remembered with state honors for centuries. The tide turned at the Battle of Gochang in 930, near modern Andong, a Goryeo victory that brought a wave of fence-sitting regional warlords over to Wang Geon's side. Here the merchant's instincts mattered more than the soldier's: Wang Geon won as many strongmen with generous terms, marriage offers, and respect as he did with battles.

The endgame was almost gentle. In 935 the last king of Silla, Gyeongsun (gyung-SOON), did the arithmetic, judged resistance hopeless and pointless, and simply handed his thousand-year kingdom to Goryeo intact. Wang Geon did not sack the Silla capital or humiliate its aristocracy. He married into the Silla royal house, gave Gyeongsun high rank and a princess, and absorbed the old elite rather than destroying it, a policy of co-option that bought him the legitimacy of Silla's long history. The same year, Later Baekje destroyed itself: the aging Gyeon Hwon was deposed and imprisoned by his own son Singeom, escaped, and, in one of Korean history's sharper ironies, defected to his lifelong enemy Wang Geon and then helped guide the campaign that destroyed the kingdom he had built. In 936 the combined armies crushed Later Baekje at the Battle of Iljiwon. For the first time since Silla's decline, the peninsula had one ruler.

Now the merchant faced his hardest problem, and he solved it with the most merchant-like instrument available: marriage as a way of buying equity in the dynasty. The kingdom Wang Geon had "unified" was really a confederation of powerful regional clans who had backed him and expected to keep their private armies and lands. To bind them to the throne without a war he could not afford, Wang Geon married their daughters, all of them: 29 wives from the leading clans across the peninsula, 25 sons and 9 daughters. The mechanism was simple and ruthless. A clan whose daughter was a queen, and whose grandson might be the next king, had bet its whole future on the dynasty surviving and the throne staying strong; a clan that revolted was now plotting against its own bloodline. He locked the deal with a grant of "merit land" (yeokbunjeon), the right to collect a parcel's tax revenue, handed to the warlords and officers who had backed him. Crucially the crown granted those rights and could revoke them, so a magnate's income now flowed through the throne rather than around it. A coalition of armed strongmen had been converted into a landed founding aristocracy whose money and grandchildren both depended on the dynasty's survival.

This worked. It also planted a bomb. Twenty-nine wives from rival clans, and dozens of sons each backed by a different armed faction, is not a succession plan; it is a guarantee of decades of murderous palace politics, and Chapter 2 opens in exactly that bloodbath. The mechanism that built the kingdom was the same mechanism that nearly tore it apart, which is a pattern this dynasty will repeat until it kills it.

Wang Geon seems to have known. On his deathbed in 943 he left his successors a set of Ten Injunctions (Hunyo Sipjo), a short political-religious testament that functioned as a kind of informal constitution and a window into exactly what he feared. Revere Buddhism, the Injunctions say, because it protects the state, but do not let monasteries multiply and grab land, because that will bankrupt the kingdom. Study the Chinese classics and Chinese statecraft, but do not blindly copy Chinese customs; Korea is its own place. Distrust the people of the old Later Baekje southwest. Keep the Western Capital at Pyongyang strong, and never stop looking north. Almost every crisis in this book is a violation of one of these clauses, which is either evidence that Wang Geon was unusually shrewd about his own creation or evidence that later writers shaped the Injunctions to fit the disasters that followed. Modern historians are in fact divided on how much of the surviving text is genuinely Wang Geon's and how much is later editing, a caution worth carrying through any "the founder foresaw it all" story.

The bomb went off almost immediately. Within two years of Taejo's death, as his short-lived first successors died in quick succession, a powerful magnate named Wanggyu (wahng-GYU; despite the name, no relation to the founder Wang Geon, since "Wang" was the royal surname Taejo had handed out to favored allies, so the court was thick with unrelated Wangs), whose grandsons by two different daughters were both royal princes, plotted to put his own bloodline on the throne by force in the rebellion of 945. Wanggyu's plot was crushed, but it was the first demonstration of the structural disease the founder had built into the foundations: a throne floating on a sea of armed in-laws. Curing that disease is the whole of the next chapter.
