Rome had already been conquering Celts for a long time before Caesar arrived.

The Roman absorption of Celtic peoples began in northern Italy in the third century BCE (the Po Valley Gauls, Chapter 3) and extended to Spain, where Rome fought the Celtiberians in a series of brutal wars from the 190s to the 130s BCE. The defining moment came at the Siege of Numantia (noo-MAN-tee-ah) in 133 BCE, when the Roman general Scipio Aemilianus (the same Scipio who had destroyed Carthage seventeen years earlier) surrounded the Celtiberian city with a ring of siege works and starved it into submission. The defenders of Numantia chose mass suicide over surrender, burning their city and killing themselves and their families rather than submit to Roman rule. The siege became legendary in the ancient world as a symbol of fierce Celtic resistance, and it still resonates in Spain (Numantia is a byword for hopeless, heroic last stands, the way "Alamo" is in the United States). Rome had conquered Celtic Iberia at the cost of decades of war and appalling casualties on both sides.

But Gaul, the Celtic heartland, remained independent. Until 58 BCE.

In 58 BCE, Gaius Julius Caesar (a Roman politician of enormous ambition, crushing debts, and no military experience to speak of) arrived in Transalpine Gaul (the Roman province in southern France, roughly corresponding to modern Provence) as its new governor. He had been assigned the province through political maneuvering with Pompey and Crassus (the other two members of what historians call the First Triumvirate), and he needed a war. Wars produced plunder, slaves, and military glory, and Caesar needed all three: plunder to pay his creditors, slaves to sell for cash, and glory to build the political reputation that would eventually carry him to dictatorship and beyond.

Gaul provided the war. Over the next eight years (58-50 BCE), Caesar's Gallic Wars would destroy Celtic continental independence, kill or enslave an estimated one million Gauls (Caesar's own numbers, which may be exaggerated but probably reflect the correct order of magnitude), incorporate an area the size of France, Belgium, and western Germany into the Roman Empire, and produce one of the most famous works of Latin literature. The conquest of Gaul was not inevitable. The Celts came closer to stopping it than most popular accounts acknowledge. And the man who chronicled the conquest was also the man who carried it out, which means our primary source is conquest propaganda of the highest literary quality.

Caesar's own account, De Bello Gallico ("On the Gallic War"), is simultaneously one of our most important sources on Celtic society and one of the most carefully crafted pieces of political self-promotion in the ancient world. Caesar wrote it in the third person ("Caesar advanced," "Caesar ordered"), creating a studied impression of objectivity while systematically presenting every decision as wise, every battle as justified, and every outcome as the inevitable result of Roman superiority. It is brilliant writing. It is also not trustworthy on any point where Caesar's self-interest is at stake.

As a source on the Celts, however, De Bello Gallico is invaluable. Caesar describes Gallic political structures, religious practices (the druids, Chapter 5), social organization, military tactics, and inter-tribal rivalries in detail that no other ancient source matches. He had a practical reason for understanding the Gauls: he was trying to conquer them, and understanding your enemy is useful. His descriptions of druidic authority, tribal councils, client-patron relationships, and warrior culture are broadly confirmed by other sources and by archaeology, even if his interpretive framework ("these barbarians need Roman civilization") is transparent propaganda.

The wars began with a pretext. In 58 BCE, the Helvetii (hel-VEH-tee-eye, a Celtic people living in what is now Switzerland) attempted a mass migration westward across Gaul, allegedly burning their own towns behind them to prevent any return. Caesar portrayed this migration as a threat to Roman interests and attacked the Helvetii at Bibracte (Chapter 6), defeating them and forcing the survivors back to their territory. Whether the Helvetii actually posed a threat to Rome is debatable. What is not debatable is that the campaign gave Caesar his first military victory, his first batch of slaves, and his first claim to have "saved" Gaul from destabilization.

Over the next three years, Caesar extended Roman control across most of Gaul through a combination of military force, diplomatic manipulation, and the exploitation of inter-tribal rivalries. The Gauls were not united. They had never been united. Tribal feuds, personal ambitions, and competing alliances divided them as effectively as any Roman army. Caesar played these divisions with the skill of a master politician, allying with tribes like the Aedui (longstanding Roman friends, Chapter 6) against their rivals, and then turning on former allies when they became inconvenient.

Diviciacus (dih-vih-see-AH-kus) of the Aedui is the only druid named in contemporary historical records, and he served as Caesar's most important Gallic ally. Diviciacus traveled to Rome to request military assistance against his tribe's rivals, and he worked closely with Caesar throughout the early campaigns. His brother Dumnorix (DUM-nor-iks), by contrast, consistently opposed Roman interference, repeatedly conspired against Caesar, and was eventually killed on Caesar's orders in 54 BCE when he refused to join the invasion of Britain, allegedly shouting that he was "a free man of a free people." The story of the two brothers encapsulates the Gallic dilemma: accommodation with Rome (Diviciacus) versus resistance at any cost (Dumnorix).

In 54 BCE, the first serious blow to Caesar's prestige fell. Ambiorix (am-BEE-or-iks), chieftain of the Eburones (eh-BYOO-roh-neez, a tribe in the Ardennes region of modern Belgium), ambushed and annihilated a Roman force of fifteen cohorts (roughly 6,000-7,500 men) under the command of Quintus Titurius Sabinus and Lucius Aurunculeius Cotta. The disaster was partly the result of Roman overconfidence and partly the result of Ambiorix's tactical brilliance: he lured the Roman column out of its winter camp with a fabricated story about a massive Germanic invasion, then attacked it in a wooded valley where Roman formations could not deploy. The Romans fought for most of a day before being overwhelmed. Almost the entire force was killed.

Caesar's response was savage. He launched a punitive campaign against the Eburones, systematically devastated their territory, and invited neighboring tribes to plunder whatever was left. Ambiorix himself was never captured. He vanished into the forests and disappeared from history. Caesar spent two full campaigning seasons trying to destroy the Eburones as a people. Modern Belgium still celebrates Ambiorix as a national hero. His statue stands in the central square of Tongeren.

But Ambiorix's rebellion was a prelude. The main event came in 52 BCE.

Vercingetorix (ver-sin-JET-or-ix, a name that means something like "great warrior king" or "king of great warriors" in Gaulish) was a young nobleman of the Arverni (ar-VER-nee), a powerful tribe in the Auvergne region of central Gaul. In the winter of 52 BCE, with Caesar temporarily away from his legions, Vercingetorix launched the most dangerous revolt that Roman power in Gaul would ever face (the same insider-builds-coalition-using-Roman-methods strategy Arminius of the Cherusci would run against Rome in 9 CE).

What made Vercingetorix different from previous rebel leaders was strategy. He understood that the Gauls could not beat Rome in pitched battle (the Roman legionary system, with its disciplined infantry formations, engineering capability, and logistics, was simply better at set-piece combat than the Celtic warrior tradition of individual heroics). Instead, he adopted a scorched-earth strategy: burn your own towns and fields, deny the Romans food and fodder, cut their supply lines, and grind them down through a war of attrition. The strategy was essentially Scythian. Whether Vercingetorix knew about Darius's humiliation on the Pontic steppe 460 years earlier is unknown, but he independently arrived at the same insight: you cannot beat a superior conventional army by fighting it on its terms. You beat it by refusing to fight on its terms and making the land itself your weapon.

The strategy was working. Vercingetorix convinced a pan-Gallic council at Bibracte to support the revolt and to implement the scorched-earth policy across Gaul. Dozens of Gallic towns were burned by their own inhabitants to deny them to the Romans. Caesar's supply situation became desperate. Then the Gauls made a fatal exception: the people of Avaricum (ah-VAR-ih-kum, modern Bourges), who begged Vercingetorix to spare their town because they believed its natural defenses made it impregnable. Vercingetorix reluctantly agreed. Caesar besieged Avaricum, took it after twenty-seven days, and captured enough food to feed his army. The scorched-earth strategy had failed because it required absolute commitment, and absolute commitment is hard when it means burning your own home.

After Avaricum, Vercingetorix won a significant victory at Gergovia (jer-GOH-vee-ah), where his forces repulsed a Roman assault and inflicted heavy casualties. For a brief moment, the revolt seemed to have a chance. Then Vercingetorix made his own fatal decision: he withdrew into the fortified hilltop town of Alesia (ah-LEE-zee-ah, modern Alise-Sainte-Reine in Burgundy) with what Caesar claims were 80,000 warriors (a figure most modern historians consider inflated), intending to use it as a base from which to coordinate a relief force from the rest of Gaul.

Caesar besieged Alesia. And what he built there was one of the most extraordinary military engineering projects in ancient history.

The Battle of Alesia (52 BCE) was decided by siege engineering on a scale that the ancient world had never seen.

Caesar constructed an inner ring of fortifications around Alesia (a circumvallation) measuring approximately 11 miles (18 km) in circumference, consisting of a trench, a rampart, palisade walls, watchtowers every 80 feet, and a series of booby traps including sharpened stakes hidden in pits (which the Roman soldiers nicknamed "lilies"), iron-tipped caltrops scattered on the ground, and a flooded ditch. This inner ring faced inward, toward the trapped Gallic army.

Then Caesar built a second ring of fortifications facing outward (a contravallation) measuring approximately 14 miles (21 km) in circumference, with the same defensive features, to protect his army from the Gallic relief force that he knew was coming.

The Roman army (roughly 60,000-70,000 legionaries plus auxiliaries) was sandwiched between the besieged garrison of Alesia (80,000 warriors) and the relief force (which eventually numbered roughly 250,000, though this figure from Caesar is probably inflated). In other words, Caesar deliberately placed his army between two vastly larger enemy forces and relied on his fortifications to equalize the odds.

The siege lasted about six weeks. Conditions inside Alesia became desperate. Vercingetorix expelled the civilian population (women, children, elderly) to conserve food, hoping Caesar would let them through his lines. Caesar refused. The civilians were left to starve in the no-man's-land between the walls. When the Gallic relief force finally arrived and launched coordinated assaults on the outer Roman fortifications while the garrison attacked from inside, the fighting was ferocious. At one point, the Roman line nearly broke. Caesar personally led cavalry reserves to the critical sector and stabilized the defense.

The relief force failed. It attacked multiple times, could not break through the Roman fortifications, and eventually dispersed. Vercingetorix, with no hope of rescue and his army starving, surrendered. According to Roman tradition, he rode out of Alesia on his finest horse, circled Caesar's headquarters, dismounted, removed his armor, and sat at Caesar's feet in silence. He was taken to Rome, held prisoner for six years, paraded in Caesar's triumph in 46 BCE, and then strangled in the Tullianum (Rome's underground prison).

Alesia was the end of Celtic continental independence. Sporadic resistance continued for two more years, but the organized opposition was broken. Caesar spent the final campaigns of 51-50 BCE pacifying the remaining holdouts, often with extreme brutality. His own summary of the Gallic Wars, recorded by his contemporaries, claims that he fought 30 battles, captured 800 towns, and dealt with three million people, of whom one million were killed and another million enslaved. The numbers are Caesar's own and are designed to impress, but even if substantially exaggerated, the scale of destruction was staggering. Gaul was Roman.

Commius (KOM-ee-us) of the Atrebates (AT-reh-bah-teez) offers a final illustration of the war's human cost. Commius had been Caesar's trusted Gallic intermediary, sent to Britain as an envoy and granted authority over the Atrebates in return for his loyalty. During the great revolt, he switched sides, fought at Alesia, and continued to resist even after Vercingetorix's surrender. Caesar's officers tried to assassinate him at a parley. Commius survived, but afterward he reportedly swore that he would never again come into the sight of any Roman. He eventually fled to Britain and established a kingdom among the Atrebates there, minting coins that have been found across southern England. A man who had been Rome's closest Gallic ally became its bitterest enemy. The pattern would repeat across the conquered Celtic world for generations.

Cross-civ check: Caesar's conquest of Gaul (58-50 BCE) was roughly contemporary with the late Ptolemaic period in Egypt (Cleopatra VII would come to power in 51 BCE), the late Hasmonean dynasty in Judea, and the final decades of the Roman Republic (Caesar's civil war with Pompey began in 49 BCE, immediately after the Gallic Wars ended). The Gallic Wars gave Caesar the wealth, army, and prestige to destroy the Republic and establish one-man rule. The Celts' defeat, in other words, was a direct cause of the end of Roman democracy. The irony is striking: the Celts lost their freedom, and within two decades, so did the Romans.
