For roughly three generations, the poorest, wettest, most recently pagan corner of a former Roman province at the cold edge of the world became one of the brightest centers of learning and art in all of Europe. That sentence should sound implausible, because at the time it would have been. It is the strangest reversal in this book and it has a fairly specific explanation, which is the subject of this chapter.

The reversal happened in Northumbria, the great Anglian kingdom north of the Humber formed from the fusion of Bernicia and Deira (Chapter 3), in the decades after Whitby. And the explanation begins with one rich man's obsession with shopping in Rome.

Benedict Biscop (pronounced "BISH-op") was a Northumbrian nobleman who, instead of spending his life as a warrior in the usual way, made the long, dangerous journey to Rome not once but at least five times across his life. Each time he came back loaded: not with relics and trophies only, but with books, by the chest, and with skilled foreign craftsmen, glaziers and masons, and with panel paintings and a precise knowledge of how continental monasteries were run. With royal land grants he founded a twin monastery, one house at Wearmouth around 674 and a sister house a few miles away at Jarrow around 682, run as a single institution, Wearmouth-Jarrow. Into it he poured a library of a size unheard of in northern Europe, on the order of two hundred or more separate works at a time when a respectable monastery counted its books in dozens and many had barely any, enough that a single scholar there could read Latin grammar, Roman history, natural science, and the church fathers without ever leaving the building. This is the concrete mechanism behind the "golden age," and it is worth being explicit that it was not spontaneous flowering: it was capital. A wealthy aristocrat converted inherited warrior wealth and royal land grants into the single most expensive thing in the early medieval world, books, brought the books and the technical skills physically across Europe by repeated personal effort, and concentrated them in one place with enough endowed land to feed scholars who did nothing but read, copy, and think. Genius needs raw material. Biscop imported the raw material by the shipload.

He also imported, for the first time in centuries in that region, the technology of building in stone. The native English built in timber, even their halls and churches. Biscop brought Frankish masons and glaziers across the Channel to raise his churches in mortared stone with glazed windows, on the Roman basilica plan, because he wanted his monastery to look and function like the Roman churches he had prayed in. A handful of these and related buildings still partly stand, the church at Brixworth in Northamptonshire built partly of reused Roman brick, Wilfrid's crypt at Hexham, fragments at Wearmouth and Jarrow themselves, and they are among the very few things in this entire book the reader can still walk into.

The library at Wearmouth-Jarrow had a purpose, and the purpose has a name: Bede.

Bede was given to the monastery as a child around the age of seven and essentially never left it, living, by his own account, a life of monastic routine and continuous study and writing until his death in 735. From inside that one institution, using that one library, he became the most learned man in western Europe and the single most important historian of the early Middle Ages, and it is worth being precise about each of those claims because they justify why this whole book leans on him.

Bede's most famous work is the Ecclesiastical History of the English People, completed in 731, Bede Writes the Ecclesiastical History. It is the foundational narrative of everything in this book; almost every chapter so far has cited it, because for huge stretches of early English history it is simply the only connected account that exists. What made it extraordinary in its own time, and what makes it usable now, was its method. Bede named his sources, distinguished what he had on good documentary authority from what he had only by report, wrote to a coherent chronology, and was openly cautious about miracles he could not verify. Set against the kind of source the previous chapters had to work with, Gildas's nameless sermon, the Chronicle's back-projected dynastic legends, Bede is a different order of thing: not a flawless or unbiased writer, he is a churchman with a strong providential thesis, but a genuinely critical historian centuries before that was common. Placed in this chain of histories, his achievement is striking. Sober narrative history had earlier high points: in the classical world, the Greeks Herodotus and Thucydides (the fifth-century BCE founders of the discipline, one the first true researcher of the past, the other its first hard-headed analyst) and the Roman historians Tacitus and Livy, and, on the other side of the world, the Chinese had been writing rigorous official dynastic histories since the Han, centuries before Bede. But across the early-medieval Latin West, where most "history" was bare annals and saints' wonders, Bede stands almost alone as a writer doing critical, sourced, structured history, from a monastery on the edge of the world, in the eighth century.

He did something else that touches every reader of this sentence. Bede needed a consistent way to date events across centuries, and in his historical and scientific writing he adopted and powerfully popularized the practice of counting years from the traditional birth of Christ, Anno Domini dating, the system that became, eventually, the global default and the reason this very book can use single year-numbers like "597" or "793" and expect to be understood. He did not invent the Anno Domini count; a sixth-century monk in Rome named Dionysius Exiguus ("Dionysius the Humble") had worked it out while building Easter tables, but his system sat largely unused for two centuries. Bede's authority and reach are why it spread across Latin Europe and ultimately the world. Whenever anyone, anywhere, writes a year as a plain number, they are using a convention an English monk made standard from a monastery on the Tyne.

It is worth correcting a common misimpression, because it bears on the rule that this book should explain mechanisms and not flatten them. Bede was not only, or even primarily, a narrative historian. The bulk of his work was scientific and technical, and his most influential single book in its own day was not the History but a treatise on time.

The early medieval church had a hard, genuinely scientific problem: computing the date of Easter, the question that had torn the church at Whitby, required reconciling the cycle of the moon with the cycle of the sun across long spans of years, which is a real exercise in mathematical astronomy. The discipline of doing it was called the computus, and Bede's textbook on it, The Reckoning of Time, completed around 725, was the standard work on calendar science in Europe for centuries. To do the computus well you have to understand the motions of the sun and moon, the length of the solar year, the structure of the lunar month, and, Bede being Bede, he extended the work into genuine natural science. He wrote on the nature of things, on the heavens, and, most originally, on the tides. Living beside the long tidal coast of the North Sea, Bede recorded that the tides are governed by the moon and, crucially, that high tide arrives at different times along different stretches of coast, and that the height of tides varies with the moon's phase, observations of real, careful, original science grounded in watching the same coastline year after year. This deserves emphasis precisely because it sounds like a modern projection and is not: the picture of the early Middle Ages as a scientific dark age is contradicted, in this instance, directly by Bede's own texts, in which a Northumbrian monk does observational astronomy and tidal physics in the eighth century. The Northumbrian golden age was not only beautiful books. It was also a man on a cold shore working out how the moon moves the sea.

And it was the beautiful books, because the same monasteries that produced Bede produced an art so distinctive it has its own name.

It is called Insular art, "insular" meaning "of the islands," Britain and Ireland, and it is one of the supreme artistic achievements of Early Medieval Europe. The way it came to be is itself the theme of this whole book, fusion rather than replacement, made visible. Insular manuscript art took three traditions that had no business combining and combined them: the swirling abstract metalwork ornament of the Celtic world, the interlaced, gripping animal patterns of Germanic art (the same artistic language as the Sutton Hoo metalwork, Chapter 4), and the human figures, architecture, and iconography of Mediterranean Christian art that came north in Benedict Biscop's book-chests. No one of those traditions could have produced it alone. The supreme example is the Lindisfarne Gospels, made on Aidan's island monastery around 715, attributed by a later note to a single bishop, Eadfrith of Lindisfarne, who, if the attribution holds, designed, wrote, and illuminated the entire vast book essentially by himself, an act of years-long obsessive devotion. Its great "carpet pages" are full sheets of pure abstract interlace, dense as woven metal, and its decorated initials are mazes the eye can lose itself in for an hour. The physical book mattered as an object, not only a text: a great gospel book was carried in procession, laid on the altar, sworn on, treated as a sacred presence in its own right, which is why it was worth a man's life-work to make one perfectly. Its forerunner, the Book of Durrow, a smaller and plainer gospel book made a generation earlier in the same insular tradition, with simpler interlace and bold abstract carpet pages but not yet the dizzying density of Lindisfarne, shows the style already forming.

The same Northumbrian world produced the opposite kind of book, and the contrast tells you how complete the achievement was. At Wearmouth-Jarrow, around 716, the monks made three giant complete Bibles, of which one survives: the Codex Amiatinus, the oldest surviving complete Latin Bible in the world, the size of a small filing cabinet and weighing about 75 pounds (34 kg), as much as a large suitcase packed for a long trip or a load it took two monks to carry. It was made deliberately not in the wild insular style but in a sober, classical, Mediterranean manner, made so convincingly Roman that when scholars rediscovered it in Italy centuries later they assumed it was a sixth-century Italian production and only later realized it had been made in England and carried back to Italy as a gift for the pope, a gift whose bearer, the abbot of Wearmouth-Jarrow, died on the road and never delivered it. That one monastery could produce, in the same years, the most exuberantly insular and the most flawlessly classical books in Europe is the clearest possible measure of what the golden age actually was: not a local style but total command of every visual language the known world had.

This world also exported itself, and that is the right note to end the golden age on, because it closes the loop the whole book has been drawing. Northumbrian and English monks, restless and well-trained and with more learning than their own island could absorb, began crossing back over the North Sea to convert the still-pagan Germanic peoples of the Continent, the cousins their own ancestors had left behind. The Northumbrian Willibrord (pronounced "WILL-ih-brord") went to the Frisians, the seafaring people of the modern Netherlands coast, around 690 with papal backing and Frankish protection, and became the "Apostle of the Frisians." The man who followed him went much further. Boniface (pronounced "BON-ih-face"), a West Saxon born around the 670s, spent decades east of the Frankish heartland not just preaching but rebuilding a church. The story everyone tells about him, true in outline if theatrical in the telling, is that at Geismar in Hesse he publicly felled an oak sacred to the thunder-god Thunor (the deity Norse tradition would call Thor), daring the god to strike him, and when no lightning came the watching pagans' confidence in the old gods broke. The lasting work was less dramatic and far larger: he reorganized the entire Frankish church, founded bishoprics and the great monastery of Fulda, bound the Continental church far more tightly to Rome, and was killed by pagans in Frisia in 754, an old man, said to have died holding a book over his head. Set the two crossings side by side. Rome had to send Augustine across the sea to convert the English; three generations later the English were sending Willibrord and Boniface back across the same sea to convert and reorganize the Continent. The student had become the teacher of its own ancestors, which is one of the most satisfying loops in this whole chain of histories. But while the north was exporting saints, the center of gravity inside England had shifted, decisively, south, to the march people of the midlands, and that is where the book has to go.
